editHello Ævar, <br style="clear:both;" /> or comparable tags beneath the babel templates on your page should help to prevend from swapping with the gallery when using smaller monitor widths ... and thanx for your support :-) Greetings --:Bdk: 03:43, 10 Dez 2004 (UTC)

Stock.xchng images
editYou uploaded some images from http://www.sxc.hu and labeled them as public domain. The SXC license is restrictive and not free. They can only be used if the user has released them under a suitable license (or allowed free use) on their sxc user page. ed g2s
- What images specifically? --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 20:41, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- "There are no usage restrictions" is confusing as what it means is, "there are no further usage restrictions". All images are subject to the terms of use: http://www.sxc.hu/info.phtml?f=terms. Unless the photographer specifies otherwise on their user page, the images are not suitable for use on the Commons. ed g2s • talk 02:50, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
What makes you think Image:SMS_message_on_a_Nokia_phone.jpeg is CopyrightedFreeUse? The stock.xchng user page doesn't mention such conditions. ed g2s • talk 11:50, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Image:2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_-_animation.gif
editI changed the status of Image:2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_-_animation.gif to unverified. It's not produced by NOAA, but rather by some Japanese researcher (government agency or university department). The English version of his webpage has an e-mail, perhaps you could clarify the copyright status.
The best thing would be if he edited his webpage to put the copyright status (in English) on his website itself. -- Curps
Also, you might want to re-download and re-upload the animated GIF. The version he has on his website now runs quite a bit longer than the version that's on here, better showing the full refraction around the southern tip of India and so forth. If so, an updated version of the small thumbnail version would also be good, if you have the tools to create it. -- Curps
- Actually i just re-uploaded the image from image:animation.gif. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 10:33, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Hi - please not that reproductive photography and and scans of other peoples artwork consitute a copyright violation. This is especially true for the cover and contents of books, booklets, CDs, DVDs and the like. Thus this image will have to be deleted - i'm going to do that now, sorry. If you are sure that this cover is (already!) under a free license, contact me and i will undelete it.
The other image of the NIN-Album, Image:Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been (DVD).jpeg, is probably ok as it shows the cover at an angle, and only part of it. Please be careful whenever your images show designes and artwork by other people - it's very likely that you violate their rights if you publish reproductions. -- Duesentrieb 17:10, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- PS: After all the nagging: thank you for the extremely beautiful pictures of snow crystalisation! -- Duesentrieb 18:54, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
No problem, and I didn't see it as nagging at all;) —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 19:38, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
sorry to bug you again, but: the above category stays empty because of a known bug (or so i'm told). JeLuF said: "Categorizations don't work if you add them in the initial upload message. Same for Links etc". You have to "touch" (i.e. minor edit) all of the description pages to make the images show up in the category. I just thought i'd let you know... -- Duesentrieb 19:20, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I'm aware of the bug (but thanks), I'll probably add a feature to my upload bot to touch pages after they're uploaded soon. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 19:38, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Licensing form
editExcellent feature! I especially like the hierarchical list view. Very nicely done!--Eloquence 04:43, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Yea, a Big thank you from me too. But I was wandering if it would be possible to include templates with parameters in the dropdown: the currently recommended way to license one's own work is GFDL - which should be in the dropdown at a prominent location. One solution would be to create a parameter-less template for this... but that's kind of ugly, and also problematic if that template is changed later, for instance to include a new version of the GFDL or CC license. What do you think? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:18, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Ok, I've created Template:Self GFDL and cc-by-sa-2.5 for a start, and added it to MediaWiki:Licenses. But I think parameters need some more thought - for instance, I belive that the "self" template should really contain the name of the creator explicitely. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:33, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- This discussion is continued at Commons talk:License selector. ed g2s • talk 11:46, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've notcied that the groups are no longer nested, so why not use the <optgroup> tag? They are non-selectable labels, with automatic indentation. Bascially what we're mimicking. Also on en., the GFDL tag comes up as #redirect Template:GFDL, bit of a bug. ed g2s • talk 14:31, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
Barnstar
editThanks for all the hard work improving MediaWiki! I'm proud to be the first person at the Commons to award you a barnstar.
By the way, are you in a position to help get SVG uploads enabled? Apparently all that's required is for someone with shell access to install sodipodi on the servers. dbenbenn | talk 19:49, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the star, never gotten one of those before;)
- Getting SVG to work correctly is kind of hard, we'd have to get a virus scanner running as well as a svg->bitmap rendered (probably inkscape not sodipodi) as well as getting all the configuration right. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 17:19, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- User:Duesentrieb says he solved the security issues, though I don't know the details about that. (See Commons:Village pump archive-14#SVG and vectoriel files.) dbenbenn | talk 17:47, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- As I understand it that relies at least partly on the clamv virus scanner, athough I might be wrong (it did some checking with regexp's without clamv).
- I might just be talking out of my ass here;) —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 17:53, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- I had thought the idea was to simply reject any SVG with javascript. That would be nearly as good for the Commons' purposes, very safe, and easier to implement. dbenbenn | talk 21:15, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- The virus scanner integration (which also works with fprot, etc) is an additional feature, independent of javascript and html-detection - it's intended mainly for detecting viruses embedded in bitmaps, office documents and such. Anything containing Javascript is rejected, no matter if virus scanning is enabled or not. Please install an SVG renderer... this is really frustrating :( -- Duesentrieb(?!) 00:30, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Faroestamps
editMany pictures of stamps from the Faroe Islands and maps of those islands taken from http://www.faroestamps.fo have been uploaded with license PD and used in national wikis. An example is Image:Detailed_map_hestur.jpg, where PD is indicated on the map. However, according to the homepage of faroestamps here, use for commercial purposes and mechanical reproduction require prior approval from the Faroese Philatelic Office. Is this consistent with the PD tag, or should another tag be used - or the pictures be deleted altogether? (which I dont hope!). --Sir48 15:08, 21 September 2005 (UTC) After writing this I found: 1 where the issue seems to have been solved. Thx. --Sir48 15:40, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Deleting Commons logo
editHello! please return ASAP Image:Commons-logo.png as this is used in many places (et:Template:Commons) and your mentioned Image:Commons-logo.svg is not working in IE! --TarmoK 07:09, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- How are you viewing it in IE? Are you using the rasterizer? Can you see the image on the right? —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 08:03, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- This is one of the strangest deletions ever. First the image is in use on many wikipedia's, and there is no reason to check every day if such an image is going to be deleted. At least you should have informed all the different wikipedia's about the plan. And I mean post a message in the village pump of each wikipedia.
- Second, the svg-image does not work in IE: the background is not transaparant, but grey. You can have long discussions about the idea that IE should stick to standards, but the fact is that it doesn't. Over 80% of the internet users are using IE.
- Anyway, the thing is solved on the Dutch wikipedia by uploading the old commons-logo locally. Of course if every language is going to do that, then the purpose of commons in lost. Please inform people next time you are planning a thing like this, so we can upload the old image locally beforehand. Taka 11:02, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
Stock.xchng images conclusion

Deleting png images for svg
editPlease stop deleting png images, if you have no intention of changing to the svg versions in ALL language editions of Wikipedia! What you're doing right now can be considered vandalism! /Grillo 16:06, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- Please restore the old png-flags of argentina, australia, brazil, canada, eu, uk and us asap. The sv wiki are referring to those images a lot. Normally it's enough to add new images --RomanNose 20:56, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- Use Check-Usage or use a bot to change all articles where the flag are used. Your current practice can be considered vandalism and makes it harder to convince people to upload photos to WikiCommons. Thuresson 20:58, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- I have reverted some images to the old image versions, it's not very difficult, but it's much extra work that's not neccesary. /Grillo 21:08, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- There's also Image:Denmark flag 300.png - [2]. PeepP 21:10, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
First of all I did not delete them, I uploaded a cross over them which indicates to projects using the image that they should stop using them and use another version (in this case the SVG version), I followed the instructions on how to handle redundant images at Category:Redundant and Template:Redundant to the letter in this matter. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 23:54, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- Could you please point me out the place where is written what is considered redundant? so far it seems purely subjective. I've been trying to draw attention to it but seems that the eagernes to delete/over write is bigger than rationality of it --TarmoK 07:44, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think there is such a page, however an image that's a smaller version of another image, a version of inferior quality etc. would be considered redundant. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 09:34, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- I guess you would agree that this is very subjective aproach. smaller could be reasoning if the smaller version is made from the bigger version, but many-many cases it isn't so. Inferior quality is same story. So basically you agree that everybody is free to mark images redundant as they wish as long images look somehow similar and user doesn't like one of them. It would be more professional and more increasing respect to commons if first is made clear about the rules under which this so calling "cleaning" is made. ... Not to mention that Category:Redundant doesn't say anything what is considered redundant.
- to ease your life, I copy here examples I wrote to Category talk:Redundant: Have a look: Image:Australia flag 300.png vs Image:Flag of Australia.svg (stars are in different positions, as well Union Jack lines don't match, one (or both) is just incorrect) or Image:British virgin islands flag 300.png vs Image:Flag of the British Virgin Islands.svg (different blue and it seems that SVG has incorrect one) --TarmoK 14:59, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- p.s. Image:Commons-logo.png is still waiting to restoring (and can't see there older version which is "uploaded a cross over")
- Why should it be restored? It's a redundant image that should be phased out in accordance with instructions at Category:Redundant and Template:Redundant. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 09:34, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- seems that you don't read replies even in your own talk page. IE doesn't support SVG transparency. and this commons image is said should be used for replacing has gray background in IE.
- I'm quite suprised your (and many other's) approach who pointing to this Category:Redundant page when reasoning deleting, but missing reasoning in first place the redundant marking. If I mark picture to be deleted everybody expects me to explain why, if I mark redundant then it is not needed? ("oh it looked similar" reasoning is enough?) --TarmoK 14:59, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Image size limits
editYou reverted my smaller version of Image:Tectonic plates.png, so the thumbnail in en:Plate tectonics no longer works. Does this mean something about image size behavior is going to change again? (SEWilco 19:57, 26 October 2005 (UTC))
- I wasn't aware that it was too big for scaling, since that's the case then we should have Image:Tectonic plates (large).png, better yet, if you can fix Image:Tectonic plates.svg to make the text in it appear we can just use that. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 03:05, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- Excellent idea. Read the edit history and a diff. (70.94.229.160 13:38, 27 October 2005 (UTC))
- I don't think there's any need for a separate Image:Tectonic plates (large).png. With the current software limitations, such an image couldn't be used in any articles, and the large version is always in the history at Image:Tectonic plates.png. dbenbenn | talk 17:11, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

editHello Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason, I'm wondering if I can add my language into like this page Image:Us_flag_large.png. Thank you. --Manop 22:28, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Hello, Ævar Arnfjörð! I'd like to know who was the wyse guy that removed Image:Us flag 300.png and Image:Uk flag 300.png from Commons? It's still used in some wikipedias, you know. If I click "What links here" on the image description page, I don't see any discussion about changing those flags. Also, I would expect to see some comments in edits like this. --romanm (talk) 02:41, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- I guess you already know that I was the one that
removedreplaced them so what is your question exactly? —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 14:48, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- The question, of course, was a rhetorical one. I strongly disagree with politics of making more work to other people on several wikipedias by deleting of so-called "redundant" images without checking and changing the usages on all wikis that use them. --romanm (talk) 22:50, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- Nothing was deleted, I overwrote them with a cross indicating that all uses of them should be replaced according to instructions, there was a discussion about this some time ago.
- I on the other hand strongly disagree with making completely unwarranted tounge-in-cheek wise-guy comments towards people who are volunteering their time to carry out maintenance tasks on the wiki in good faith according to instructions on how to do so. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 02:43, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Commons-l subscription
editHello Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:57, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
I have listed this image on Commons:Deletion requests as it is a derivative work of something that is copyrighted. Kotepho 19:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Scottish royal coat of arms.png
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Scottish royal coat of arms.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Ég er með lélegt notendanafn
editHæ. Eysteinn hér af is:W. --Steinninninn 15:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Administrative notice
editHi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.
If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.
This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

Cumulus_butts_in_fair_weather
editGreetings from South Carolina ETV and Knowitall.org at Knowitall.org! I am a Curriculum Coordinator for Knowitall.org, currently developing and correlating content for RiverVenture.org. I was wondering if you would you be willing to contribute the use of your pictures like "Cumulus_butts_in_fair_weather" to the RiverVenture Web site (http://www.riverventure.org/). The picture would be used in a new, upcoming module that will focus on the geology of the coldwater, mountain stream ecosystem of Carrick Creek at Table Rock, South Carolina, so we are searching for pictures like this one to help illustrate the water cycle. Knowitall.org is ETV's portal to FREE, Web-based multimedia featuring a collection of interactive sites for K-12 teachers, parents, and students. You'll find animated games and simulations, virtual tours, research resources, close-up investigations of the environment and much more! There are many South Carolina-related resources here, too. It is a valuable educational tool that can enhance learning by allowing children to interact with quality, standards-based information and content. We would happily give you credit for use of your photo(s). Please just send me an e-mail reply as to whether you are willing to share and on what terms and conditions.
In the instances we use your photograph, we will be happy to publish it with a courtesy credit in the form of a watermark on the photo reading "Michael Jastremski CC," unless otherwise specified. Please let us know if you would like it to say something else specifically. Your work will be protected under copyright of the ETV Commission, used as content and for promotion connected with ETV's newest module of RiverVenture and Knowitall.org, and related projects. We would be sure to notify you when the Carrick Creek module of RiverVenture goes up, and you could let us know if you have any objection to the use of your photos in the site. We will do our best to help you maintain creative control of your work. Thank you very much, again!

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:28, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Administrative notice
editDear Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).
If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.
Thank you — Mike.lifeguard 16:51, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

De-adminship warning
editDear Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.
If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.
You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.
Thank you
