Your stitched picture

edit

I'm really not sure that the gray stain that comes from the top margin of the picture is a stitching mark, but it looks like one. The same regarding the smaller one at left - Alvesgaspar 00:10, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Benjamin, could you please let me know whether this image is a single photographic shot, or whether it is a composite? Regards, --MichaelMaggs 12:41, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Nice photographs

edit

I am impressed with your bird photographs, but I think you are always going to be fighting an uphill battle with the composite images :-). From the looks of the quality of the Silver Eye one recently submitted to QIC, I would have thought that either of the two (?) images that made it up would be a QI candidate - do you still have the separate images? As I have noted on the review of the Grey Fantail it's a bit difficult when you have an image where the front and back birds are in focus, but those in between are out of focus :-). The Superb Fairy Wren looks good for QI promotion, DOF a little shallow as grasshopper and tail out of focus, but over-all a great photo - I was wondering whether you might put your obvious editing skills to work on the noisy background which might disqualify it in some reviewers eyes :-) --Tony Wills 02:52, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Looking closer (x8 magnification!) I see that noise is some sort of processing artefact (enlarging? sharpening?) and the body of the bird has it too. --Tony Wills 12:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer of help with Commons:WikiProject Birds. Any help in any area would be appreciated, I suppose there are two distinct areas in which you may be able to help:
  1. upload any good resolution and sharp pictures of birds (composition, backgrounds, noise etc aren't so important, just true representations of the species). Doesn't even matter if you don't know the exact species, but a common name and where they're found at least would help :-)
  2. any help you can give on identifying species that you recognise (even if you only know the common name) would help see Category:Unidentified_birds and check that no birds in Category:Birds_of_Australia are mis-identified.

There is a page but it doesn't have a list for south-eastern Australia. Do you have a list of birds you have photographed and do you know where to find a list of birds in your area? ---Tony Wills 12:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Were you going to upload a new version of your QI candidate with the out of focus foreground cropped? Now that the nomination has been changed to a decline, QICbot will remove it in another day or so. Perhaps move the image to Consensual Review to give yourself more time. --Tony Wills 07:04, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Also regarding the compression problem, this may have affected some of your other photos, eg the QI review of Image:Silvereye - juvenile.jpg mentioned JPEG artefacts, and the image was only about 200kb, probably should have been compressed no more that 750kb --Tony Wills 12:49, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Benjamint444. Your Ensay misty photo made me take a second look because it seemed odd that this particular region of rural Australia would have produced two Wikipedia photographers, you and Fir0002. Then I remembered an interview on WikipediaWeekly where I think Fir mentions a brother. Is that you, or are you a friend/relation of Peter's? Apples vs Wrens

edit

"they're not nearly as bad this time as with the wrens image". The combined bird photos show interactions/behaviours of birds which were unlikely to occur - eg birds standing very close to each other but somehow not interacting with each other. But having sorted out what (the previously unstated) rules were about combined images (ie the editing should be described), I think too many people are not assuming good faith on your part and are overly suspicious of every image you offer. Odd lighting of apples may be a QI flaw but shouldn't be a contentious issue. So continue with the great images but describe any edits :-) --Tony Wills 11:41, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't know. Part of my brain is saying, hang on, there's something odd. But I can't work out what. Maybe it's a difference in the lighting. Maybe it is is just knowing that it's a composition. All the best, Ben Aveling 10:41, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

I need a better camera

edit

One of my photos is now a on Wikipedia, they certainly seem to expect a lot more than on commons (there was very little criticism here). I'm coming to the conclusion that my Olympus camera is a bit of a limitation. :-( --Tony Wills 06:25, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions, I haven't looked at the Panasonics, but your photos show their quality. One thing that really annoys me about the Olympus is it's inability to focus in low light levels, and often slow auto focus. How's the Panasonic in low light or for quick moving subjects? --Tony Wills 11:20, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I use 'The Gimp' on Linux as editing software, which seems quite capable of doing what I need, except that I really haven't used it, enough or read enough tutorials, to do everything I want to. So I can do basic stuff like crop, rotate, white balance, adjust brightness levels on the whole image etc, but haven't mastered using layers and masks to help separate out the background so that I can blur it or sharpen the main subject etc. --Tony Wills 11:05, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Helo Benjamint,

In the Featured Picture nomination of your image, some people have stated that the information is insufficient. Although putting just Swifts Creek, Victoria, Australia would be enough, I'd like to go a step beyond and also note the exact location, just to make this wonderful picture even better. Using Google Earth, I've found the location to be this, so, if you could take a look, preferably with Google Earth, I'd like your confirmation. Thanks, and thanks for your top-quality work. - Keta 16:24, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

pouty predators

edit

Somewhere I read that you were still in high school and good with photoshop. I am not going to argue with either of these things, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Let me make a little gallery before I ask my question(s)....

My first reaction when I see these photographs is always "Aw" and then I feel a little sick of and disappointed with myself because these are proud and brave predators (except for the emu, I don't know how they get their food). Then I wonder if they are being held/restrained for the photograph, and I start feeling a little more sick of and disappointed with myself. These pouty predator photographs of yours never show the whole body. It is a very psychological journey and probably very very predictable -- at least the first 'aw' part of it.

And that is one of my questions, are the animals being held by their keepers while you get the photograph? The other questions are more education oriented: are you manipulating the eyes? If so (and even if not) did you learn your photoshopping techniques from a teacher at your school or from a book or a little of both of those with a little help on the 'aw potential' from the reaction of the girls there? Sorry to make it a genderish question, but I think it just is one anyways.

That second small gallery is another successful "aw campaign". This one never worked that well on me but is quite similar I think to what your photographs do. As strange as this seems to me, I am sorry that the collection of photographs of these images is so small because I think it should have been easy for me to match a precious moment photograph with one of yours. The baby and the owl almost go together though, don't you think?

Please overlook the rudeness of these questions, I know it is there. Instead, look at the compliment I am giving you of knowing so much more than they (probably) knew (or were willing to share) when I was in high school. A friend of mine once suggested that they should require marketing science for high school graduation. It was a good suggestion but if they start to do that now, there are a lot of idiots like me who would be at the mercy of modern day high school grads -- where the rudeness is there is also a compliment of the latter order also. -- carol 12:21, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

You didn't mention if you had 'shopped the eyes. -- carol 04:21, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Ben likes to not declare his photoshopping of images (which means reviewers don't trust him, but he never learns ;-), I think he should just add {{RetouchedPicture}} to his standard template and be done with it. He is sometimes more interested in making 'good looking' images than documenting what is actually there.
PS I think the whole colour cast of image:Chappell Island tiger snake.jpg was too red already (from the artificial lighting?), and now the red mouth and jaws look unrealistic. :-) --Tony Wills 11:21, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Tony, but I've made correct use of {{RetouchedPicture}} ever since my 1st and 3rd FPC noms when I wasn't aware of it. Ignorence is no excuse and I'm not defending what I did then but I've done things properly ever since. Tiger snake Image: too red? Maybe, maybe not. when you know something has been edited you look at it with different eyes.Benjamint 12:02, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
