Deutsch: Die Karlskirche am Karlsplatz im 4. Wiener Gemeindebezirk Wieden. Die Kirche, dem heiligen Karl Borromäus geweiht, wurde anlässlich der Einlösung eines von Kaiser Karl VI. während der Pestepidemie am 22. Oktober 1713 bei St. Stephan abgelegten Gelübdes errichtet. Die Grundsteinlegung fand am 4. Februar 1716 statt und am 28. Oktober 1737 erfolgte die Weihe durch Kardinal Sigismund Graf Kollonitsch, wobei die erste Messe in feierlicher Form und in Anwesenheit des Kaisers erst am 24. August 1738 abgehalten wurde. Errichtet wurde die Kirche nach Plänen des Architekten Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Nach seinem Tod (1723) vollendete sein Sohn Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach mit dem Bauführer Erhard Martinelli den Sakralbau. Die beiden Triumphsäulen sind 33 m hoch, während die Kuppel über dem längsovalen Hauptraum eine Höhe von 72 m erreicht. |
