Summary
editDescriptionThe Tower of Oinoe on 27 August 2020.jpg |
English: "Oinoe Tower
The isolated square tower of Oinoe, side 8m., is preserved at its northwest corner, with 32 courses, to a height of 14m. The four lower courses are of compact limestone; the upper courses of conglomerate. The difference in building material and in construction indicates two building phases, the latest of which is dated around the middle of the 4th century B.C. From joist-holes, visible in the interior of the tower, that held the floor-beams, it is estimated that there were four floors. The uppermost series of joist-holes will have supported the roof. Floors2, 3 and 4 had archers’ slots, while there is evidence that the upper floor had two windows for small catapults. The entrance was probably in the north side. The location of the tower, its size and equipment support the view that it was military in character. It must have controlled the basic Athens-Thebes road that ran a little to the north and served as a beacon because of its visual command of at least three strategic positions. The tower controlled the NW borders of Attica and was part of the general Athenian defence system during the 4th century B.C." Text: Site marker |
