Summary
editDescriptionPoyle Pump 022.JPG |
English: The Poyle Pump at grid reference TQ034766 on the Bath Road between Poplar Close and Sherbourne Close in Poyle, Slough, United Kingdom. Inscriptions on or near the pump read: 'The Poyle Pump erected in 1827 by the Colnbrook Turnpike Trust. Restored in 1992. Contractor CDR Construction Ltd' and 'This pump was erected by order of "Beau" Nash of Bath in 1754'. I think the 1827 date is more likely (possibly replacing an earlier one erected in 1754). This page at villagepumps.org.uk says:
Presumably the water tanks were mounted on the back of horse-drawn carts, which would explain the need for the great height of the pump - nearly 3 metres. (Previous mention of traction engines removed: the first traction engines didn't appear until the 1850s.) See also: Longford Pump which stands 2 km to the east. |
