English: INS Rajali in collaboration with 'Nandavanam'- a Chennai-based NGO is establishing 'Rajali Miyawaki Forest' inside the base with as many as 20 different species of trees. The plantation drive was inaugurated by Commodore R Vinod Kumar, Commanding Officer INS Rajali on 22 August 2022. During the event, he motivated the unit personnel to make this plantation drive a part of the pious mission of life. The forest will have nearly 13200 saplings planted in a 14000 square meter space. The saplings being planted include different native species, including neem, vengai, poovarasu, sorgam, mantharai, nochi etc. The Japanese technique of Miyawaki refers to planting native species in the same area. It took two months for INS Rajali to prepare the area for planting. The process included manual stone and concrete bits removal, levelling the land, developing an auto-cut-off drip irrigation mechanism for automatic watering of plants, making pathways and channels to supply water and planting of saplings. The Miyawaki method takes more than a month to prepare the land and divide it into four layers to plant the trees. Fixing support sticks to each plant, re-mulching and sprinkling microbes and boosters for proper plant development is an integral part of post plantation maintenance. Plantations at INS Rajali are four plants per square centimetre. The method, named after botanist Akira Miyawaki encourages trees to grow upwards instead of sideways to allow forestation in small urban spaces. |
