editDescriptionMatter Family Tomb Detail.jpg |
English: Details on the Matter Family Tomb before the restoration of 2010/2011. Alfons Matter (1850-1947), the renowned builder\businessman who developed the district of Cieszyn that became known as Matterówka, died in Gliwice during forced deportation after WWII but his body was brought back to be buried at Grave XV-31. As with other gravestones in the cemetery, many German inscriptions and German names, especially 'Adolf', were erased following the end of WWII. (In this instance the name 'Annie' was apparently erased because as a 'non-Polish' name it was assumed to be German.)
The Scotch Mist Gallery contains many photographs of historic buildings, monuments and memorials of Poland. Polski: Galeria Mist Scotch zawiera wiele zdjęć zabytkowych budowli, pomników i miejsc pamięci w Polsce.
Note: The label "BRAK PROLONGATY GROBU" (roughly translated as 'Grave without grace') affixed by the Cemetery Authority effectively serves notice that access to the grave site for further burials will be sold unless future maintenance fees are paid, a practice apparently common throughout Poland. Regrettably, especially when relatives no longer live nearby and/or are not contacted by the Cemetery Authority, this practice can lead to the removal of enscriptions and the loss to future generations of valuable information about their ancestors. |
