Description

Labourers unload trucks of fresh fruit by basket.

The Koyambedu market is an amazingly bustling place as fruits, vegetables and flowers are brought in fresh by truck, unloaded in bulk to wholesalers along the market outskirts. By the bag, box and bushel, it is then re-loaded into other trucks to make its way to stores and smaller markets all over Chennai.

At the same time, by the basket or bag, the fruit and veggies are also shifted deeper and deeper inside the market buildings themselves to re-sellers who sell to eevn smaller re-sellers and people who then stock their small shops, carts, restaurant, or bit of sidewalk.

It is amazing logistics, fresh produce always coming and going in a chaotic looking, but highly organised and efficient system, somehow able to get a vegetable from the fields to your plate in the 2-3 days it takes to spoil in the tropical climate through dozens of different hands.
