English: Guestwick railway station (converted) - view along the platform Guestwick railway station > 2263251 served the Norfolk branch of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway in the 1880s. It was situated on the line from Melton Constable to Norwich City, with the preceding station being Whitwell/Reepham and the next one along the line being Hindolveston. It was closed in 1959. Guestwick station, set in about 4 acres of ground > 2263260 that used to be sidings and goods yard, is privately owned and not accessible. This picture was taken by permission of the owner who kindly gave a guided tour. Although a small extension was built onto one end of the original station building, the station is very well preserved and has retained many of its original features > 2263257 including platform and signal box > 2263297 as well as two platelayer's huts > 2263273 - 2263270. When the M&GN was closed in 1959, Themelthorpe Curve was built to join the M&GN and Great Eastern (GER) tracks - later to become the LNER - to accommodate traffic from a concrete works at Lenwade which made prefabricated buildings so that trains were able to avoid a long detour. This traffic ceased in 1982. |
