Description

Vintage embossed and hinged toffee tin (manufactured after World War II and before 1971), originally sold by Farrah's toffee shop in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. John Farrah's signature was registered as a trademark in 1887. The 1840 date on the top of the tin refers to the year in which John Hudson Swan invented the toffee recipe.

The base of the tin has a Best Before date sticker of February 1971, so the tin was almost certainly manufactured before 1971. The base gives a contents weight of 3 and a half ounces or 100 grams, which supports the Best Before date sticker. (In the UK, the imperial→metric changeover occurred in February 1971).

Copy of a 19th-century design

This is a copy of a 19th-century design commissioned by the same toffee manufacturer. The earlier design can be seen here: File:Farrahs Harrogate toffee (1).JPG.

The signature is likely to be partly the genuine 1887 signature of John Farrah, and partly a professional letterer's artwork, because the word "John" contains an idiosyncratic script, but the word "Farrah" is written in a professional copperplate style. This trademark signature is the original design of 1887, as registered in that year by John Farrah..
