Description

Two U.S. Navy Vought F-8C Crusader aircraft (BuNo 146993, 147022) from Fighter Squadron VF-111, Det.11 Omar's Orphans and a RF-8G (BuNo 146866) from Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron VFP-63, Det.11 Eyes of the Fleet in flight. The aircraft were assigned to Carrier Air Wing 10 (CVW-10) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) for a deployment to Vietnam from 11 May to 30 December 1967.

The F-8Cs were a detachment of VF-111 Sundowners, which was assigned to CVW-16 (note tail code "AH") aboard USS Oriskany (CVA-34). 146993 was shot down by flak over the Red River delta, North Vietnam, on 12 August 1967. The pilot ejected and was rescued by a U.S. Navy helicopter.
