Description

A HAVE-A-GO HERO and his new bride who thwarted an armed robbery at a Coventry store have been recognised for their bravery at an awards ceremony last week.

Richard Chetwynd and his wife were presented with Good Citizens awards by Deputy Chief Constable Dave Thompson at Tally Ho on Thursday 25 July for their "brave actions of the highest order".

In July 2011 Mr Chetwynd visited the One Stop Shop on Wheelwright Lane only to walk into an armed robbery; the attacker was threatening the staff with a knife and demanding they hand over cash.

And as the robber tried to flee the store, the 36-year-old "without hesitation" prevented him from leaving.

A violent struggle ensued and Richard’s head was smashed against the glass door. His then fiancée who was waiting in the car saw the commotion and leapt into action.

Running into the store, Claire jumped on the robber and helped Richard wrestle the man to the ground.

Richard and Claire straddled the crook and pinned him down on the floor until police arrived.

Detective Inspector Martin Slevin, who investigated the robbery, said: "Without doubt Mr Chestwynd’s brave actions are of the highest order and worthy of formal recognition. Mrs Chetwynd also displayed significant courage in assisting Mr Chetwynd."

The robber was also charged with a previous robbery at the store and appeared at Coventry Crown Court in March 2012 charged with two offences. In total he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
