Notes Black and colored chalk, pen and brush in brown, black and white on pink-tinted paper. Preliminary drawing for the half-length portrait of the French ambassador to the court of King Henry VIII of England in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. Charles de Solier (b. c. 1480) was in London between 3 April and 26 July 1534 as a French ambassador. At this time Henry VIII was attempting to win French support for his repudiation of Catherine of Aragon, in alliance against the Empire. Holbein's study resulted in an oil painting of Morette. This followed his painting of two French envoys the previous year in The Ambassadors.
