Summary
editDescriptionChurch of St. Book 01 (11607624996).jpg | The town of Óbidos, about 100 km northwest of Lisbon, is continuously reinventing itself as a tourist magnet: first it was the capital of chocolate, then the capital of cherry liqueur, now the capital of cherry liqueur served on edible chocolate cups. Its latest aspiration is to become a book town, like Hay-on-Wye in Wales or Fjærland in Norway. In late 2013 five bookshops were in operation, with several more expected to open in the future. One of the bookshops is the Grande Livraria de Santiago in the former church of S. Tiago which was no longer in use. It is an 18th century baroque building erected after the original 12th century church was razed to the ground by the 1755 earthquake. In adapting the space for use as a bookshop, much care was taken not to damage the walls in any irreversible manner. |
