Summary
editDescriptionApollo obelisk of Apollonia, Albania 01.jpg |
The Apollo Obelisk, a Greek monolithic limestone column dedicated to the god Apollo as Agyieus, protector of streets and houses, the cylinder would have been ornamented with Apollo's lyre as well as the bow and quiver of Artemis, Apollonia, Albania. This kind of representation is found widely on ancient coins, sculptures and frescoes out of which can be developed the full object molding: over a platform there stand vertically a ornamented cylinder around which is Apollo's lyre as well as the bow and quiver of Artemis, like we see on a bas-relief preserved in Rome. These monuments of ancient origin recognized a new craze at the time of Augustus, but in Apollonia these monuments have probably been present throughout its history. Indeed, several Agyieus elements were found in the city. They could also serve as gnomons for a sundial. |
