I tried the upload wizard a few times. I liked the look and feel of the wizard and found it easy to use when uploading one or more files. I received the following message:

DestinationChecker::checkUnique> error in checkUnique result

At which point, the upload wizard never returned with a message to retry. Victoriaedwards (talk) 15:29, 2 May 2011 (UTC) Upgrade your browser right now! Marthelati 09:33, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Rights release

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0

I have uploaded a number of files and tried to release them into public domain, using the Creative Commons Zero license radio-button. This produces a bug: instead of {{self|cc-zero}}, I get many repetitions of "self" within the template, e.g. {{self|self|self|self|self|self|self|self|cc-zero}}.

Can this be fixed? Better still, can I set public domain as the default preference for my uploads? Thanks. --Ammodramus (talk) 21:20, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm not able to reproduce this in FF or Chrome either with single or multiple file uploads. Are you able to repeat this, and if so, do you have time to provide exact steps to reproduce?--Eloquence (talk) 05:15, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm using Firefox. The problem doesn't occur on the first batch of files that I upload; nor does it occur on a second batch if I click the "Upload file" link in the left-margin menu of Commons. It has occurred when I've uploaded additional batches of files using the "Upload more files" button at the bottom of the final page of the upload wizard sequence (the page with "Thanks for uploading!" at the top).
For what it's worth, I've checked the "Skip this step in the future" checkbox on the bottom of the first page of the upload wizard. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I will experiment later; right now, I have a slow connection, and the library's about to close and kick me out anyhow.
--Ammodramus (talk) 01:51, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Have experimented further. The problem seems to be associated with the use of the "Upload more files" button on the bottom of the last page of the upload wizard sequence. Each time I click it and upload a new batch, it adds another "self|" to the license; thus the first batch of files came through OK, with "{{self|cc-zero}}"; the second batch had an error, with "{{self|self|cc-zero}}"; the third had "{{self|self|self|cc-zero}}", etc.
After several iterations of this, I clicked the "Upload file" link in the left-margin menu, checked "Skip this step in the future" on the bottom of the first page, and uploaded another batch. The license came through fine; when I again clicked "Upload file" in the left margin, and uploaded yet another batch, there were no problems with the license.

Don't upload an 200MB .ogg video

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; de; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110614 Firefox/3.6.18

I try to upload an .ogg video with a resolution of 720p for 2.5 hours. My Task-Manager (Windows 7) says that nothing has been transmitted since the opload process has started.

.ogg files with smaller file sizes can be uploaded without any problems. Medvedev (talk) 20:54, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

There is a general 100 MB limit per file for uploads (see the text in the old upload form). I guess it also applies for the upload wizard. Compress it more or split it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:23, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Thank You! I also thought that the filesize is to big, but I was'n able to find this information in any Help article. --Medvedev (talk) 16:48, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Four files won't upload after filling in all the required data. Apparent cause: I tried to upload a 5th file which I had already uploaded. When I found this out I removed that file and put in all the data for the others. Now I can just sit here and guess whether they will finally upload, or perhaps try again - which might cause even more problems (e.g. are these already uploaded, or do they just disappear?) More than ten images

I am temped to upload all the normal x ray views. Would be a bit of a project and it would be easier if I could upload more than ten images at a time. Would be nice to upload 100 images at a time. Is it possible to change upload Wizard to accommodate this?--James Heilman, MD (talk) 18:27, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Until such a thing is implemented, you can perhaps use Commonist. With regard to your emaillist suggestion of "When I click "Use this file on a wiki" can we have the description automatically added as a caption? This would save me a lot of clicks.", I would like to point out that a Description and a caption are and SHOULD be rather different. A description describes the entire image in detail. A caption should give a comment with the image that is relevant to the specific section in which you include the image. For instance: The image of the first launch of a spaceshuttle is used in many articles. None of those articles use the description as a caption, and the caption is different for each article. Such is good authorship and writing and should be encouraged in my point of view. TheDJ (talk) 20:53, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi, this is a page for feedback regarding the Upload Wizard, so you have not come quite to the right place, I think COM:VP would be better. However, I had a look - it's about File:Lester Johnson.jpg? This seems to be taken from the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress at http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=J000158 . If they got the wrong picture for the Directory, maybe you could contact them directly. And of course you could upload another picture of your grandfather here, if you own the rights and if you are willing to release it under a free license. I love Upload Wizard

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0

Upload Wizard is vastly superior to the previous uploading method, both in terms of efficiency (uploading 10 images at a time is great) and usability (natural language-based prompts about the sources of and licenses for images, for instance, are much easier than entering code). However, I'm curious as to why the GFDL is not included as an option for licensing: I dual license all my original work with CC-BY-SA 3.0 and the GFDL, which was the default option under the old uploading system, but the new Upload Wizard only gives the former as an option, so I've been adding the GFDL manually after uploading. It is not a huge deal, but it would be easier if the old CC-BY-SA 3.0-and-GFDL dual licensing option was still selectable during the uploading process itself. Thanks! • Did you have another account before registering this one one week ago? Your tone gives away some experience. I don't see any "previous uploading method" in your history. And you followed all your wizard-uploads with manual category fixes. Something that most new users never do. NVO (talk) 02:39, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Lovely interface. Very happy with it - better than the old one. But dear goodness, could you please make it easier to find? I couldn't find the link anywhere on the Community Portal; searching for 'add a photo' and similar took me minutes to find it. Could you please tell us which interface language you use? Is it not accessible via the upload link on the left side of every page here? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:42, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

I don't know for User:Iridia but for the Dutch language (nl) the default is still the old upload form (with a yellow box asking pleople to help test the new UploadWizard. HenkvD (talk) 18:21, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Okay, even a box. If you want it more integrated you may want to do it like Commons:Hochladen which cares for all groups of users. I dislike the english version where the hard default is the upload wizard depsite many many people (majority?) wants to use the old forms. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:40, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I am new to wiki commons and previously uploaded this picture, realized it was going to be in the public domain and I deleted it. Hi Rallison321, you could just use a name which is a bit different (if you are talking of File:Jeffrey Nadler MD FACP.jpg: just do not use exactly this name). Or ask for undeletion at COM:UNDEL or use the old upload forms. You have suffered from a known bug in this not-finished software. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:12, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello, if the title begins with a blank, one gets "an unknown error has occurred", retry doens't work, and on continue uploading, the image is not uploaded. This is well designed. However, I think it should ask if the uploaded file should be on the contributor's watchlist. Or indeed it could even add it to the watchlist without being asked. Hoary (talk) 04:44, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Support if the Wizard asks, Strongest Possible Oppose if the Wizard does not ask - I think the bold text speaks for itself. This tool makes enough bad decisions for its users without asking (see below), let's not add one more to the list. Sven Manguard (talk) 22:05, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
The last tick in Special:Preferences#preftab-5 should do it - without the wizard it does - afaik. Multiple issues

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:6.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0

1) The only reason I can think of for artificially limiting the number of characters that can be used in the source field... is stupidity. There's no kind way of saying this, you are creating attribution problems for no good reason.

2) If you're going to limit the number of PD-USGov licenses allowed in the wizard to two (there are about 100 in use), you really need to have a manual override field so that people that know what they're doing can input licensees without having to backtrack, remove the license that the Wizard forced us to use, and replace it with the one we actually want.

3) The wizard stuck a {{Flickrreview}} template in the upload. Wha? At no time did I even indicate that this came from Flickr.

I agree that a wizard is needed for inexperienced users, but if you're going to do it, do it right, and do it in a way that dosen't hamper the experienced users. And yes, this does hamper experienced users. Sven Manguard (talk) 22:02, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I agree, and I said much the same thing here very recently. I quote a response by Saibo: The last tick in Special:Preferences#preftab-5 should do it - without the wizard it does - afaik. If this setting would be added to the page JS mediaWiki.config UW could read it and add files to watchlist or not. (You'll see this response in context very shortly above.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:40, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
And in fact it works - just tick it. See two sections above. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:15, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Orientation, and changing one's mind

As the very new and short history of File:Syabi2.jpeg will show, I uploaded the photo as merely autorotated 270 degrees by my viewing software. A stupid mistake for which I make no excuse, but surely it's a mistake that's often made, and by people who might be even less clueful than me. As soon as I noticed this, I looked for a way to uncheck a box for it, or similar, but no such box appeared. (If I remember right, such an option came later. I lazily didn't take it, and instead reuploaded.) It occurs to me that the software on the server might (at some point) usefully do what (for example) Gimp does: look at an image to see if it has rotation info (sorry, I forget the technical term) and, if it finds this, point out that the image will by default appear like so and ask if it should instead appear like so. Yes, yes, more programming, but it would avoid some wastage of server space and also grumpiness from users ("There's something wrong with your website, because that photo displays perfectly well on my computer"). And in the short term, how about an option (or, if there is one, then a more conspicuous option) on the very first screen to change one's mind about uploading this or that image? -- Hoary (talk) 01:36, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Obviously I didn't know it, having posted on the Wizard feedback box. There are none of the usual links to this page until you look at your contributions list. The final publishing stage just falls over with "An unknown error occurred" and sometimes other messages. Retries also fail. I've operated the wizard successfully plenty of times before, but have tried about 10 times in the last 48 hours, with different files, & this is all I get. Small problem: it does not seem possible to add a pipe symbol in the Categories. For pronunciation files this is a problem, because everything gets alphabetized under the language prefix, eg. Nl-ertoe falls under Nl unless |ertoe is specified Jcwf (talk) 01:52, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

I had the feedback that certain file names cause an "unknown error" just before the image is uploaded. I could reproduce it by using a hash (#) or multiple spaces in the input file name. The error message in these cases should be adapted to "invalid filename, please ..." etc.

Next thing: this feedback comes from Commons, but the header tells me it goes to prototype. Is that intended? regards, elya Elya (talk) 17:55, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Regarding the page title, I think this page still has the prototype in the title from the days when that was the only charitable description that we could give to the feature.
