Commons:Requests for rights/Denied/Filemover/2012

I would like access to the Filemover right in order to quickly fix title mismatches between Commons and the English Wikipedia. I am currently participating in a drive to move images from English Wikipedia to Commons. I am an administrator on the English Wikipedia. Thank you. Grondemar 23:16, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not done Sorry, but 87 edits are not sufficient. Commons rules may be different to wikipedia rules, so please use {{Rename}} a×pdeHello! 01:12, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but, in particular, I don't think what you suggest you would do is correct -- if a Commons file and a WP:EN file are identical, then the WP:EN file should be deleted, as WP:EN will then automatically look for the file here. If they are not identical, then they should have different names. Therefore, I don't understand "fix title mismatches".      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:23, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically, I was trying to fix two files that I uploaded from English Wikipedia to Commons, where Internet Explorer (I usually use Firefox, but could only use IE that moment) subtly changed the filename upon saving and I didn't notice since the file was uploaded. I need to keep the history tied between the deleted file on English Wikipedia (some of the files have en.wp-specific templates that need to be preserved) and the new file at Commons, and it would be far easier to fix the title at Commons rather than move the file at en.wp and then change all of the links to the new title. I was trying to gain access to fix these issues myself rather than bother other people with these minor issues. Grondemar 23:53, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aha -- I see. You want the deleted file name on WP:EN to match the new name on Commons -- that does make sense -- the addition of the word "deleted" makes all the difference. I'm afraid I still agree that you're light on Commons experience for a Filemover here. If {{tl|1=rename) doesn't get you quick results, you can always try a note on my talk page -- I'm usually on Commons on a daily basis.      Jim . . . . Requesting the filemover right as I would be able to work through the category of files on Commons requiring renaming, in the same way as I have worked through the English Wikipedia version. Thank you. Cloudbound (talk) 15:46, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am requesting the filemover right for my account, as I sometimes need to rename a file here. I am an admin on enwiki and spend the majority of my wiki time there, so my use of this right would be limited to a few times here and there within a year's time. I feel that I can be trusted with the tool, as admins on enwiki are automatically granted the tool. I've requested a rename twice within the past year (here and here). Thank you. Eagles 24/7 (C) 22:28, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the images are misnamed, or have names which are meaningless, so I have been requesting that a number of them be renamed. I have uploaded a number of files to Wikimedia Commons. I will be moving the DSC#### names to a more descriptive title. I am also an old user of Wikimedia Commons. I also have many rename requests: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I have more rename requests, too. I also have a firm grasp of policies and guidelines of Commons, and I will be trusted with the right. One of my images was the POTD for Odia Wikipedia, too. Thank you. Dipankan001 (talk) 10:36, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

THIS IS SHOUTING, axpde was not. This is where to apply. You applied, and were declined. (sorry I misread your question) --99of9 (talk) 05:55, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dipankan001 asked when, not where. Dipankan001 can apply when he has made enough {{Rename}} requests to prove that he knows the policies. Next time when you apply for the rights, please let us know the files which you have suggested renaming. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:48, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm adding more few - 9, 10, 11, 12, and as I had given before, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Is this insufficient example? Thanks, Dipankan001 (talk) 11:49, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am not quite happy with this request. The name wasn't that big to ask for a rename. It was renamed only because you were the uploader. --Sreejith K (talk) 11:53, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now I'll remember that. All my other requests are successful, too. I just asked for it to be renamed because the name was more easy and quick to write, i.e if we type in a hurry, anyone may make a spelling mistake as the name is quite large. Dipankan001 (talk) 12:04, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Now I currently have about 108 files uploaded. Dipankan001 (talk) 10:21, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is this a successful request. or is this going to be declined? If declined, when should I apply for it? Dipankan001 (talk) 09:13, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This request is   declined as 250 edits is really not enough for now. Please use {{Rename}} for a while and re-apply later if you have enough experience. Usually that's when you have between 1500 and 2000 edits. So really, wait for a while now. Thanks for your understanding. Trijnstel (talk) 14:12, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If one can apply for adminship with over 1000 edits, I think asking for 2000 edits for a filemover is a bit too much. Whats important is how much you have understood the policy and how you have displayed it. I think a fair number of valid rename requests should be enough, although I really can't comment how much is a fair number. --Sreejith K (talk) 14:47, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Sreejithk2000. Set a target of at least 500 edits? 1500 is too much. Dipankan001 (talk) 15:40, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You may ask any questions if you like. Dipankan001 (talk) 07:06, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop asking right now. Your request is declined, no matter if you agree with the current rules or not. Trijnstel (talk) 17:54, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've got quite busy now by moving miles to Commons. Dipankan001 (talk) 09:35, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was already granted filemover right but User:Trijnstel removed it because she thought I had renamed "files without following the policy". At first she removed my filemover right and then asked me for an explanation. I explained for her that I had renamed files according to the renaming policy, but she refused to give it back. She asked other sysops opinions about this problem and they unanimously stated that she was wrong. Now I want my filemover right back. Thank you. Americophile 01:33, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This discussion shows you neglect the substantive argument about the galleries guidelines and only read what you want to read, ie some sysops wouldn't have suppressed your right.
I'd probably personally discussed the issue with you instead to remove directly the flag, but seeing how you react in the AN discussion and in the current request, I'm strongly against giving you the flag back. --Dereckson (talk) 20:28, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you ever read the gallery guidelines? If so, you probably know that there was/is no arguments like "Please take a look at کرمانشاه where all descriptions are in English. This mix is, in my opinion, not helpful. Multiple galleries in different languages can happily co-exist to the same topic" so I was not aware of it, but when User:AFBorchert wrote this argument, I found it completely logical and I tried to follow his opinion in Iran and Hamid Karzai galleries (i.e. making them bilingual). If I "only had read what I wanted to read" as you say, I wouldn't make them bilingual at all.
Please consider the fact that moving galleries is completely irrelevant to the filemover right. Furthermore, I don't see any hostility or illogical reactions in the AN discussion or even this request on my part. If there is any, please let me know. Americophile 21:09, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am also against you getting the right back. Tomtomn00 (talk) 17:31, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As I upload files to a wikipage I realize that the files are incorrectly named and therefore unusable (namin conventions do not allow spaces between words). Uploading new set of this time correctly named files proved unsuccesful as these files there is no distinct diference between these files. What I would like is:

- *deletion* of the files currently occupying space or - *renaming* these files. Example renaming "File - gif.gif" to "Filegif.gif" (i.e. removing dashe, removing space)

I hereby request that this user's filemover right be removed, because his actions show that he is unaware of the file rename policy and just insists to cause trouble on Commons. Please see Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:JBarta_and_File:Biographies_of_living_persons.jpg and [9]. -- Liliana-60 (talk) 19:11, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised to see how my friend is wrongly portraying an issue: the discussion cited pertains to categorization - right or wrong - which is in each Commons user's domain. My categorization as "Biographies" was based on the description of the file "Biography of living persons". Since the category was disputed, I took the issue to User Problems Noticeboard. It was from here, the file was marked for deletion and later deleted. There is no dispute involved with renaming here - so the whole issue is needlessly overbloated and wrongly stated. The second case mentioned under [1] probably pertains to a rename request by a German lady - The original file name, as I remember, was in German and requested name was in English. I refused the renaming. Where am I wrong to be stripped of my filemovership ? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:21, 20 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Got it! She's annoyed at my cautious approach. Her rename request might be genuine - but the very fact I tried avoid renaming under #2 because the name already had a meaning, irked her and she posted the above stuff against me. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:55, 22 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Not done Yeah, umm... 1) this isn't the place for removal of rights requests, and 2) I'm going to need to see something more before I yank filemover. Seeing as this issue has been dead for a month, I'm closing it. Sven Manguard Wha? 07:14, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I want to rename the files of the government gazettes I've uploaded. I want to choose a system of naming like it is used for example in Category:Deutsches Reichsgesetzblatt 1871. If it is just renaming a few of your already uploaded files, you can simply make rename requests for them as an uploader and leave the rest of the task to humble filemovers like me because this is a one-time exercise. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:33, 29 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
A few hundred not a few, actual more or less than 500 files, that should be renamed!--IusticiaBY (talk) 13:52, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly 474 files, Category:Gesetz-Sammlung für die Königlichen Preußischen Staaten 1879 (225 f.) Category:Gesetz-Sammlung für die Königlichen Preußischen Staaten 1888 (2 f.) Category:Gesetz-Sammlung für die Königlichen Preußischen Staaten 1894 (247 f.).--IusticiaBY (talk) 14:00, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to be a fairly big number. Anyway, I've renamed one of the files requested by you. All the best. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 14:28, 30 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]

This user is not reliable and he is dangerous. He doesnt care about the use of the files he destroys, and he doesn't respond when asked to repair what he did. Marc (talk) 09:07, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can cite a few examples of the damage IusticiaBY has done, please? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 18:02, 3 July 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Here are the books he destroyed : s:fr:Livre:Wells - La Russie telle que je viens de la voir.djvu, s:Index:Wittengenstein - Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, 1922.djvu, s:Index:Russell, Whitehead - Principia Mathematica, vol. I, 1910.djvu, s:Index:Our knowledge of the external world.djvu, s:fr:Livre:Russell - Le Mysticisme et la Logique.djvu. Marc (talk) 19:10, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This was nothing more than an unfair personal attack, see Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#User:Marc --IusticiaBY (talk) 18:31, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it fair to see several books and several hours of work destroyed without any effort of your part to repair what you have done ? Marc (talk) 19:10, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
These were all clear copyvios! And if I were able to speak French, I would also request their deletion on French Wikisource.--IusticiaBY (talk) 19:20, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not convert this forum into a free for all disputes-settling venue. And I mean this to both of you. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:41, 4 July 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Not done I'd really like to see two months or a hundred edits more to the file namespace before I hand you filemover. There's no indication that you'd do wrong with it (I've disregarded Marc's implications otherwise), but we have these experience thresholds for... some reason. Alternatively, if you're active on another project please let me know which one(s), because I take cross-wiki experience into account. Sven Manguard Wha? 07:34, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trusted user, he doing every day lot of good rename requests. Rzuwig 21:10, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comment He had filemover rights until Feb 2011, but lost it due to "abuse of filemover rights: moves against policy after warning not to do so". Trijnsteltalk 22:36, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's been over a year since DS67 has had the right removed. I'm willing to grant DS67 the right back if he is willing to agree to follow the outcome of the discussion that I just started at Commons talk:File renaming#Policy on very short filenames (which is the only concern I really have regarding DS67), and otherwise follow the moving policy, (but that goes without saying). Sven Manguard Wha? 23:00, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was the admin that removed the file mover rights from DragonflySixtyseven. The reason was that DragonflySixtyseven insisted on moving files to make the filenames more descriptive without following the established criteria on Commons:File renaming.
As I understand Sven Manguard then DragonflySixtyseven still does not agree when to move files with short file names. So what changed since February 2011? If DragonflySixtyseven on any time had posted on my talk page. "I'll promise to follow Commons:File renaming. Can I have my file mover right back?" I would have given it back at once. --MGA73 (talk) 10:33, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I decline to abase myself before MGA73, thank you. I will continue doing what is right. DS (talk) 05:21, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What is right is following the renaming criteria as the community understands them. Only if you agree to that can you have the filemover bit back. Rd232 (talk) 10:00, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the comment above explain why it is a bad idea to trust that DS will follow the renaming criteria and why it was correct to remove the file mover right. So I still   Oppose. --MGA73 (talk) 15:41, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should heed the opinion of someone who has screwed around with filenames "just for fun" (22:41, 29 July 2011 MGA73 (talk | contribs) moved page File:AMO.jpg to File:A pink square with 3 yellow letters (A, M and O) in it - probably a logo.jpg (Just for fun...)). DS (talk) 20:09, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Guess which user made me do it... (on a file that was deleted anyway). Yes you are right... ^ Also I did that once a year ago. DS will do it hundreds or thousands of times. He has the right to move files on en-wiki and he does not follow Wikipedia:File mover there so why should he do so here? (Not that Wikipedia and Commons is the same).
To closing admin/crat: DS has been on my back ever since I removed his file mover rights and I will waste no more time on this. I tried real hard to tell DS how categories work and how to use descriptions but I had no luck. You have all been warned now about DS. Judge for yourself. --MGA73 (talk) 20:35, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
a) I can't make you rename files. You did that one specifically as a taunt. b) To which of my file-renames on Wikipedia do you object? DS (talk) 16:23, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Not done I gave you what I thought was a very easy offer to accept, and not only did you choose not to accept that offer, but you chose to reject it in a fashion that indicates a troubling amount of stubbornness and zealotry. If you ever get file mover back, it's not going to be now and it's certainly not going to be from me. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:43, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As well as having and using the right on enwiki, it would be useful for correcting wrongly named files I see quickly. Thank you. Rcsprinter123 (talk) 08:58, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not done 72 edits is insufficient. Commons is differrent from enwiki. Please gain 1000-1500 edits and reapply later--Morning Sunshine (talk) 11:10, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I only have ~150 edits here as most of my activity happens at the English Wikipedia, but have encountered a few situations in the course of my recent contributions to Commons where it would have been helpful to be able to move (my own) uploads myself, rather than having to ask someone else to. I'm an admin over at en.wp, if that helps indicate my trustworthiness. I'm not super hyped about having filemover rights, so won't be upset if they're declined, but it would be handy for day-to-day operations. Thank you. — Hex (❝?!❞) 19:31, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not done I'd like to see more edits to this project, or at the very least, a dozen good rename requests. Yes, you're an en-wiki admin, but you only have 43 edits to the file namespace over there. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:12, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I already have file mover rights at the English Wikipedia, have been requesting names here also. I would appreicate having the right as well to help with renaming files for numerous reasons. Thank you. TBrandley (talk) 03:09, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  Not done 80 edits is insufficient for filemover--Morning (talk) 03:28, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to have the file mover right to help with moving files that have not been named correctly. See my page at en.wiki for more information on myself. Thank you. Gwickwire (talk) 00:07, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I ame an active editor from the English Wikipedia and I'd like to help renaming files here at Commons. I am a file mover on en-wiki and understand the renaming criteria. This would also help me rename my uploads in case I make unintended mistakes. Thank you. Hahc21 (talk) 02:35, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
