Scientific Design (SD) was pleased to host members of our local community at its headquarters. Members of the Little Ferry, NJ government and police department joined SD leadership for a gathering to share about the respective organizations, shared goals, and future opportunities. During the meeting, SD’s leadership emphasized its commitment to the community and its desire to contribute to the health and well-being, environmental wellness, and educational achievement of its Little Ferry neighbors. They discussed areas where SD can continue to support Little Ferry in addition to periodically hosting Little Ferry emergency services’ active shooter training and emergency drills and sponsoring little league baseball.  Everyone involved was excited to explore ways SD can support the community’s educational goals. Atieh Jabareen, CEO and President, states that “SD is committed to step up the engagement and the support of the LF community”. Through Little Ferry’s connections with Bergen County Technical Schools discussions have begun to initiate programs to encourage STEM education for students.

This Juneteenth Scientific Design recognizes and celebrates African-Americans who have contributed greatly to chemistry and chemical engineering. Although there are many more than we can feature in this post we encourage everyone to start with these innovators and dig deeper into many more and their valuable contributions. Marie Maynard Daly (1921 – 2003) Daly was the first Black woman to receive a PhD in Chemistry in the US (Columbia University 1947). She made significant contributions to medicine through her work with proteins, sugars, and cholesterol. Her lasting impact is evident in her work to increase the participation of minority students in medical schools. St. Elmo Brady (1884 -1966) Brady was the first African-American to earn his PhD in chemistry. His commitment to chemistry education resulted in the development of chemistry curricula, faculty programs, and facilities at four historically black colleges: Tuskegee University, Howard University, Fisk University, and Tougaloo College. Norbert Rillieux (1806 – 1894) Rillieux is one of the earliest chemical engineers. His invention of the multiple-effect evaporator disrupted sugar processing, improving quality and efficiency while lowering cost. His invention is widely acknowledged as the best method to lower the temperature of all industrial evaporation and to save large amounts of fuel. Mae Carol Jemison (1956 -) Jemison is the first African-American woman in space. A polymath with degrees in Chemical Engineering and African and African-American studies (Stanford University, 1977), and a Doctorate of Medicine from Cornell Medical School. Before being accepted to NASA Jemison worked as a General Practice doctor. In addition to her varied professional experience, she is also a published author, choreographer, and has made an appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation. #juneteenth #chemists #chemicalengineers #scidesign Click on the following links to learn more: African Americans in Science & Technology: Selected Titles (Library of Congress)            https://lnkd.in/etaFwtEZ ACS Honors African Americans in the Chemical Sciences https://lnkd.in/ggVvbKYp

SD Represented at the NJ State-of-the-State Manufacturing Summit Joe Dotzman, VP of Manufacturing and Site Services, and Claudine D’Angelo, Marketing & Communication Specialist, recently attended the State-of-the-Sate Manufacturing Summit at the NJ Statehouse in Trenton. The event, sponsored jointly by NJBIA (NJ Business & Industry Association) and NJMEP (NJ Manufacturing Extension Program) brought together NJ manufacturing industry leaders, state legislators, and business executives to discuss the industry’s most critical issues. In addition to networking with business leaders and legislators, attendees were brought up to date on business concerns, trends, and initiatives that impact manufacturing across the organization. Discussions about sustainability initiatives and government support for manufacturers to execute these projects featured prominently. D'Angelo noted, “It is important for SD to be a part of the solution and work with other manufacturers and legislators to achieve Triple Bottom Line Goals (People, Planet, and Profit) that would be difficult to accomplish as individual companies.” “Meeting with state leaders through this event was a valuable experience”, said Dotzman, “It enabled us to talk about SD and SABIC and our importance to the NJ economy. We engaged on topics such as the negative impact of proposed higher state business taxes, and the need for training programs to develop a strong pool of skilled labor for New Jersey manufacturers. These and other current issues that were discussed are all important to SD. It was great to make connections with key officials.” #njmep, #njbia, #scidesign, #manufacturingcounts
