❓ Why is the antenna of a radio located outside the device? I finally understand! The walkie-talkie has been around for almost a century, which is half a century longer than cell phones. While cell phones have evolved from the bulky "bricks" of the past to today's sleek smartphones, walkie-talkies still retain that “classic” look with external antennas. So, is the external antenna a result of technical limitations, or is there more to it? First off, walkie-talkies are a type of radio communication equipment that relies on radio signal “working frequencies.” In China, cell phones typically operate between 900MHz and 1800MHz, while public walkie-talkies (civilian models) are regulated to operate between 409 and 410MHz. To transmit radio signals efficiently, the antenna must be designed to be half the wavelength of the frequency it’s operating on. The formula for wavelength is the speed of light divided by the frequency, meaning higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths. As a result, cell phones have much smaller wavelengths compared to walkie-talkies. When designing an antenna, it’s usually not practical to make it exactly as long as the wavelength, but ideally, the longer the antenna, the better the signal quality. Additionally, since walkie-talkies are often used in scenarios where appearance isn’t a primary concern, the design of the antenna takes precedence over aesthetic considerations. Given that walkie-talkies operate at relatively low frequencies compared to cell phones, they require longer and larger antennas to ensure effective signal transmission.
