Dutch designer shares an inspiring trip to Shenzhen Earlier this month, Dutch graphic designer Mark van Wageningen / Novo Typo undertook a trip to Shenzhen to participate in the Unfold Art Book Fair, the Typography Fusion Sino Western Exchange conference and several workshops. This is the second time in only half a year he visited the #GreaterBayArea. In January, invited by SP SendPoints the Chinese publisher of his book Type and Colour, and supported by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou, Mr. van Wageningen attended the book launch in Guangzhou and he was also introduced to interested institutes in Guangzhou and Shenzhen for a series of presentations and workshops. During the visit, he met with plenty of Chinese designers, publishers and cultural entrepreneurs who are interested in his work, and laid foundations for new collaborations. "Mutual respect is the basis for cooperation between Chinese and Dutch designers. I believe we have a lot to learn from each other in many different areas. The possibilities and opportunities for collaboration offered by individuals and organizations in China are very great. I therefore hope to return often. " said Mr. van Wageningen. https://lnkd.in/dyJsHHys #Dutchdesign #graphicdesign #Dutchculture #DutchcultureinChina

Last week, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China organized a field trip to Zhuhai. The first part of the day was spent visiting the Hengqin Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Zhuhai, one of the three free trade zones in the Greater Bay Area. The other two free trade zones in this area are the Nansha Area of Guangzhou and the Qianhai-Shekou Area of Shenzhen. In the second part of the day, the group visited the Chinese biomedical company Jafron. Our colleague Fons Klein Tuente joined the programme to learn more about Jafron and the innovation infrastructure in Hengqin FTZ. Jenesy Wang, from the Economic and Trade Department at the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou, also participated in the programme. She has expertise in Life Sciences and Health domain. Deputy Director General Lei Hua of the Zhuhai Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) welcomed the group and his team gave an introduction into Hengqin FTZ. Hengqing FTZ, near Macau, promotes international trade and investment. It fosters innovation and cross-border cooperation in finance, tourism, healthcare, education, and technology, offering tax benefits and simplified customs to attract foreign investment. Significant infrastructure investments support industry growth, emphasising R&D and high-tech companies. A notable feature is the University of Macau's campus in Hengqin, which offers free internet access not subject to China's Great Firewall. This special arrangement allows students and faculty unrestricted access to global online resources, facilitating academic research, international collaboration, and communication. Jafron Biomedical is unique due to its innovative technology and specialised focus on blood purification. They offer a wide range of products designed to effectively remove toxins and harmful substances from the blood, catering to various medical needs. Jafron has a strong commitment to R&D, with more than 60% of employees working in R&D department. In the collaboration with China two important themes are sustainability and health. A recent visiting delegation from the Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) and a group of Dutch health experts came to meet with their Chinese counterparts and a major topic was sustainable healthcare or green hospital development. What happens when one Dutch artist in Beijing addresses the concerns of this delegation? She gets to work! Maria Koijck creates poignant and thought-provoking works, turning discarded materials into large sculptures. Her work is informed by her transformative experience as a nurse who became a patient. When she underwent a breast cancer operation, she realized just how much waste is produced by the health industry. During her recent visit to Beijing, Maria collaborated with Chinese artists, students, cancer survivors and healthcare professionals. Together, they created community waste sculptures and participated in workshops. In below video you can see how collective effort and joy of creative expression underscore the shared themes of environmental consciousness, resilience, and the transformative power of art in personal and community healing. Did you know that a big percentage of global carbon emissions can be attributed to the medical industry, in no small part because of single-use plastic materials? Have you ever experienced a lightning-bolt realization when it came to plastic waste? Human beings always seek to “get better”, but what is the cost to our environment? With this question, last Saturday, the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou hosted a sustainability theme talk and workshop with Dutch artist Maria Koijck in the Art Institute of the Orient in Guangzhou. Dedicated to environmental awareness and creative reuse of materials, Ms Koijck shared her initial experiences and inspiring journey with plastic pollution to her impactful work in raising awareness about medical waste, exemplifies the impact art can have on our understanding of sustainability. She got diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and got a surgery operation recently, from which she discovered 60% of the surgery materials used is disposable. And she decided to find out how much waste it really was for a single operation and turned it into a piece of great artwork which went viral. During the event, acting Consul General Antoni Mandemaker said in his speech, “#Sustainability is a priority theme for the Dutch government. We have been actively engaging in various initiatives to promote sustainable practices, not only within the Netherlands but also through international collaborations. The Netherlands strives to halve the consumption of raw materials by 2030 and achieve a fully circular economy by 2050, while China aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 which aligns closely with our objectives, creating a strong foundation for cooperation. Maria Koijck's work is a perfect example of how we can address these challenges creatively and effectively. Through her art, she transforms waste into thought-provoking pieces that raise awareness and inspire action.” Prior to Maria’s talk, Senior Commercial Officer Jenesy Wang gave an introduction on the latest policies of the Netherlands on climate change and sustainable healthcare. We also invited Angela Li 李圳香, founder of Art23 Contemporary Art Gallery, with a multifaceted dialogue with the audience, which generated a lively interaction and discussion on the topics of “plastic soup” and medical waste issues. The ocean energy delegation, which had been in Beijing for an intensive 2-day program (https://lnkd.in/guv-4uN5), arrived in Guangzhou last night to continue their activities in the province of Guangdong. The programme started on Wednesday morning with a session at the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou. The delegation members were welcomed by Acting Consul General Antoni Mandemaker, who gave a detailed introduction on the economic situation in Guangzhou. This was followed by a briefing on the delegation's stay in Guangdong, given by Karin Han, who was mainly responsible for organising and planning the extensive and in-depth delegation programme. Afterwards, Fabian BLAKE provided insights from the Business Confidence Survey of the EU Chamber in South China, detailing the attitudes of EU businesses operating in the region. The session concluded with a presentation by Andy Tang from Huisman, who shared experiences of a China-based Dutch company active in the offshore wind market. Following the morning session and a typical Cantonese-style dim sum lunch, the afternoon consisted of an expert seminar session and a one-on-one matchmaking session for all delegation members. Antoni Mandemaker kicked off the afternoon session, emphasising the importance the Netherlands places on sustainable development and continuous innovation. He acknowledged China's status as the largest wind energy market globally and its significant role both domestically and internationally. Antoni Mandemaker expressed his hope that through the day's exchange, both sides could share experiences, learn from each other, and jointly tackle the challenges of climate change. Before the delegation members introduced themselves on the stage with 5-minute pitches, there were several presentations from experts in the ocean energy sector from both the Dutch and Chinese sides, discussing policy, technology, innovations, and challenges. The whole session was professionally moderated by our colleague Karin Han and Marius Koops of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency . The day ended with a dinner networking session at the beautiful residency of the Consul General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou, attended by more than 40 guests.
