Surjeet is sick and he visited a doctor… “It is important to finish the whole course of antibiotics. Otherwise, not all bacteria exposed to antibiotics are killed.” “So what? I always feel better after 2-days of medicine.” “These remaining bacteria can become superbugs. If that happens, we cannot kill them using antibiotics anymore.” “OH, I see! I have to then follow your instructions.” We're delighted to share a selection of comics drawn by schoolchildren in India, showcasing their impressive understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and how it can be prevented. These creative and informative comics were produced during workshops in schools in Rupnagar, Punjab, and Dhunela, Gurgaon. The project was part of the Superheroes Against Superbugs initiative supported by Centrient, with workshops assisted by World Comics India. We think it’s important to empower young people and educate the next generation about the importance of responsible antibiotic use – especially in India, which faces one of the largest burdens of drug-resistant infections in the world.   Take a look at the comics – and the students in action! #AMR #AMRawareness #AMReducation #ScienceEducation

When you think about the deadly threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the first thing that comes to mind might be the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. But for pharmaceutical companies that manufacture antibiotics, as we do at Centrient, there is another critical aspect that must also be prioritized: how can these life-saving medicines be manufactured without contributing to the spread of AMR?  Specifically, how can we safely dispose of wastewater and solid waste and monitor air quality from the manufacturing process – which contains antibiotic material – without giving bacteria in the environment any opportunities to develop resistance? Centrient is at the forefront of industry efforts to ensure antibiotic manufacturing does not have the unintended side effect of driving drug resistance. In fact, we are a founding member of the AMR Industry Alliance, a coalition dedicated to curbing AMR. At Centrient, we have a clear purpose: to improve lives through innovative and sustainable manufacturing of medicines. That’s why we’re determined to ensure wastewater discharge from our sites and our suppliers’ sites is safe and does not fuel AMR. By acting now on responsible manufacturing, we can help curb the rise of this global health threat. Check out what we have done so far below!

Diseases are an ever-changing, often life-threatening enemy – and when bacteria and fungi adapt their defenses so that antibiotics and antifungals can no longer destroy them, infections become difficult or even impossible to treat. This is called antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and it is one of the top global health threats facing humanity today.   Antibiotics are one of the cornerstones of modern medicine, but their effectiveness is being undermined by rising AMR. That puts medical progress at risk, because we need antibiotics to treat everything from urinary tract infections, to septicaemia, to meningitis. Antibiotics are also used during other medical procedures and treatments to decrease risk for patients, such as during surgery, childbirth and chemotherapy for cancer.   Unfortunately, the emergence and spread of AMR is accelerating. According to the World Health Organization, the main drivers are the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals and plants. When we unnecessarily expose bacteria to the antibiotics in our arsenal, we give them more and more opportunities to mutate or acquire resistant genetic material, leading to the development of drug-resistant pathogens.   AMR is a complex issue to tackle. But it is also absolutely critical. As a key manufacturer of antibiotics, antifungals and other foundational medicines, Centrient is committed to being part of the solution. We’ll be sharing a series of content to raise awareness of AMR and explore how we can combat its spread together – watch this space!

Eliminating obstacles to antibiotic access is essential for ensuring sustainable availability of key medicines for all. To learn more, explore the AMR Industry Alliance’s Call-to-Action event, which emphasizes the need for responsible antibiotic use and equitable access.

Antimicrobial supply chains must operate smoothly. But in many parts of the world, the supply chain is unstable, leading to limited—and therefore inequitable—antimicrobial access for patients who need them. Removing barriers to registration, accelerating approvals, improving forecasting through better data collection and surveillance, and reforming antimicrobial procurement practices are critical steps the United Nations Member States can take to ensure antimicrobials are accessible to all who need them. Subasree Srinivasan, Gareth Morgan, Ramanan Laxminarayan, and Erika Satterwhite discussed the need to remove barriers to access while also ensuring responsible use at our Call to Action event.
