ASTM’s consumer products committee (F15) has begun a new subcommittee on firmness and breathability of juvenile products (F15.12) on infant breathability test methods. The subcommittee was established to fulfill a need for testing specific to infant products. ASTM member Michael Leshner says that testing methods must be adapted for infants when it comes to their size, weight and force of their face against a product. Thus, the subcommittee is making these the focus of its first three work items. These proposed standards cover surface firmness, airflow resistance, and carbon dioxide re-breathing, respectively. On Thursday, September 26th, Emmanuel Escoto Gonzalez, manager, global cooperation — thinking ahead of future ASTM participation at the COP30 in Brazil — participated in "Mobilizing Finance and Science: Nature-Based Climate Solutions for the Brazilian Amazon." Escoto had the opportunity to meet Luiza Bruscato, global executive director of Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS), and discuss the potential for a presentation about ASTM standards impacting sustainability and resilience. Escoto also met with Wayne Walker, chief scientific officer, and Nancy Bridges, director of strategic events and protocol of Woodwell Climate Research Center, and discussed potential partnerships during COP29 and COP30. Also on Thursday, Escoto participated in the Reporting on the SDGs with "Double Materiality: A Workshop on Enhancing Corporate Sustainability," where he got to meet, among others, Cristina Gil White, interim CEO at Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and discussed how ASTM International standards touch 12 of the 17 SDGs, including SDG13 on Climate Action. #ClimateWeekNYC #UNGA24 #SDGs #SDG13 #USAID #UNICEF #COP29 #COP30

Considering the enormous contribution ASTM International standards makes to climate adaptation efforts worldwide, three ASTM staff participated in Climate Week NYC, held earlier this week during the United Nations General Assembly. Emmanuel Escoto Gonzalez, manager, global cooperation, attended events held, including the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) & Clean Capital Finance Roundtable CWNYC. ASTM is a BCSE’s COP29 sponsor, and will be part of their delegation during COP29. Escoto (left in photo) also reconnected with his former UN colleague from Kazakhstan, Mr. Didar Temenov, director of the department of multilateral cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan (right), and informed him about ASTM's partnership with KazStandards, plans to host a Kazakhstani expert during the 2025 Standards Expert Program, and ASTM participation during COP29. #ClimateWeekNYC #UNGA24 #SDGs #SDG13 #USAID #UNICEF #COP29 #COP30

We just wrapped up our first in-person Officers’ Training Workshop since 2018 at ASTM International Headquarters! 🥂 It was a high-energy week filled with lots of networking opportunities, engaging conversations, and valuable learning experiences for both ASTM Staff and Members. We don’t get a lot of opportunity to work with our members outside of committee meetings, and we are so grateful that so many were able to take the time out of their schedules to be a part of this exciting event. Thank you to everyone who was a part of planning and attending!

ASTM's metallic and inorganic coatings committee (B08) has developed a standard on measurement of chromium and chromium alloy thickness that provides a new, valid method for measuring trivalent chrome. “Existing test methods using coulometric and X-ray for thickness measurement are inaccurate when evaluating chromium deposits from trivalent chromium plating solutions, due to its alloy properties,” says Mark Schario. “This new standard has identified and uses a physical measurement, so alloying elements of the chromium deposit will not interfere when determining thickness.” For more info, see https://lnkd.in/eKnKDM5K #chrome #chromium #metal #metals #metallic

A new standard developed by ASTM’s paint and related coatings, materials, and applications committee describes a practice for the nondestructive evaluation of newly applied and previously installed coating/lining systems using an acoustical sounding technique. According to ASTM member Bill Corbett, the new standard describes a procedure for lightly tapping the coating/lining using a non-sound dampening tool to detect relative differences in reflective sound, which may be an early indication of detachment from the substrate. You never know who you will meet at ASTM Headquarters in West Conshohocken, PA. At today's Officers' Training Workshop, it was former NASA astronaut Christopher Ferguson! In photo, left to right: ASTM's Kathie Morgan, special advisor to the president, with Andy Kireta, president; Christopher Ferguson; and ASTM's Dan Smith, vice president of technical committee operations. The Officers' Traning Workshop is intended for committee officers, subcommittee chairs, technical contacts, or others in leadership positions who are aspiring to become officers. Ferguson, former astronaut and current Boeing consultant, is vice chair of ASTM's commercial spaceflight committee.
