We just heard a thought-provoking panel on Next-gen Technologies Crafting the Future of Protein on Day 2 of the Future of Protein Production Amsterdam conference. The panel, moderated by Thomas Cresswell from Melt&Marble, addressed the most significant challenges and opportunities in advancing protein technologies. The first key question focused on the biggest challenges and opportunities for next-gen protein technologies. The panelists agreed that scaling production, ensuring affordability, and maintaining high-quality are crucial hurdles. Elvedin Ramani from holac Maschinenbau GmbH highlighted how advancements in cutting and processing technologies can help create high-quality, structured protein products. Meanwhile, Dr. Ralf Winkler from Elementar emphasized the importance of accurate protein measurement to ensure scalability. When it came to AI's role in accelerating advancements, Sebastian Blum from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences shared how AI is transforming precision fermentation. By speeding up fermentation process development and leveraging high-throughput microfermentation, AI helps optimize bioprocesses in ways that were previously unattainable. Another crucial topic was collaboration and competition. The panelists discussed how partnerships between industry stakeholders, from tech innovators to food producers, will be vital in pushing these technologies forward. Dr. Katharina Dahlmann from Hamilton Process Analytics emphasized how real-time analytics and data sharing can improve overall process control and scaling. Looking ahead, the panelists predicted that data handling and AI integration would be the next big milestones for the industry. As Sebastian pointed out, data scientists will soon be as important as research scientists to make large-scale protein production more cost-efficient. Finally, the panel concluded by reflecting on barriers to mass adoption, including consumer perception, regulatory hurdles, and the need for continuous innovation. The general consensus? The next decade will see protein technologies revolutionizing our food system with AI-driven production processes, precision fermentation, and advanced bioprocessing playing central roles in shaping the future.
