🌲 📰Last week Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) released Additional sector guidance for forestry, pulp and paper. 🌱This is an essential step towards fulfilling the nature-positive agenda that strives to reverse biodiversity loss and ensure the sustainability of ecosystems, which are the foundation of human well-being, economic prosperity, and climate resilience. 🌎 As stewards of the world’s working forests, the forest sector has a vital contribution to make towards nature positivity, through preserving ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and providing essential raw materials. This is critical to guarantee its own durability. 📊 It is crucial to recognize the significant differences across sectors when implementing TNFD recommendations. That is why these sector specific guidance's are so important, as they will help companies from eight different sectors to apply the LEAP approach and apply the core disclosure metrics in the most effective way. 🤝 FSG has been working in close collaboration with TNFD and partners to develop TNFD’s Forestry and Paper Additional Guidance, which supports the implementation of TNFD recommendations by the forest sector. It provides tailored guidance, specific examples and metrics to assess and disclose on sustainable forest management and other nature-positive actions. 🗺 Contributing to this work was part of the implementation phase of the FSG’s Forest Sector Nature Positive Roadmap with the overall aim to support businesses in the sector in scaling up actions to halt and reverse nature loss, setting nature targets, and disclosing progress. 🔍This year we are continuing this work, building a user-friendly tool to support companies to identify and prioritize metrics that will help them show progress towards nature positivity. 👀 Stay tuned! #naturepositive #disclosure #forestry Bernard de Galembert Jessica Fonseca da Silva Edie Marriner https://lnkd.in/epHDAYZE.

🌎🦋Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay! One day to celebrate, 365 days to act! 📅 🏞 This year’s theme is land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. 👩🌾As highlighted by #SDG15 ‘Life on Land’, healthy land is vital to support ecosystems, agriculture and communities. Yet, according to the UN Environment Programme, 2 billion hectares of land is degraded, affecting more than 3 billion people. 🌳As stewards of the more than 1 bn hectares of the world’s forests globally, the forest sector plays a critical role in maintaining and enhancing land and ecosystems. In 2023, members of WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Forest Solutions Group reported: ➡24% of their land was set aside primarily for nature conservation or restoration, representing an area of 5 million hectares, equivalent to 7 million soccer fields ⚽ 🌱 FSG’s Nature Positive Roadmap highlights a couple of examples of restoration practices from members: ◾ HVP Plantation, a timberland management entity of Manulife Investment Management, worked in collaboration with local partners to help regenerate areas of warm temperate rainforest in Australia, adjacent to its productive forests. In addition to natural regeneration, the effort included removal of alien species and replanting of 11,000 native rainforest canopy trees. ◾ International Paper partnered with WWF to restore degraded forests in the Mogi Guaçu watershed in Brazil, helping regulate soil erosion, filtering out pollutants, maintaining watershed stability, and creating corridors for wildlife. 🌳 WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s FSG Director, Bernard de Galembert had the pleasure of representing the FSG at PEFC International's annual Forest Forum in Paris earlier this month! 🤝 It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with others in the forest sector and discuss how we can play a critical role in addressing climate change. 💬Following this insightful day where we heard from a range of engaging speakers, here are some of our key takeaways: ◾ There has been an impressive expansion of forest certification across working forests globally which is a positive sign that the sector is embracing sustainable forest management. ◾ The forest sector is walking the talk on their decarbonization commitments. Company representatives, like Sarah Price from Sappi exemplified this. ◾ The urgent need for the forest sector to adapt to climate change is still underestimated. ◾ There are exciting plans happening at the national level provided they are rightly implemented, for example the French governments focus on forest resilience, adaptation and reforestation, with their announcement to plant 1 billion trees in France over 10 years. ◾ The combination of emission reductions, carbon removals and product substitution by the forest sector is likely to deliver significant climate change mitigation benefits. ➡ If you attended the keynote speech and want to learn more about FSG's Decarbonization catalogue that provides 10 high-impact actions to reduce emissions and increase carbon removals, you can find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e4SgqcPc PEFC FRANCE Jessica Fonseca da Silva Edie Marriner #decarbonization #forestsector #adaptation #certification #netzero #naturepositive

🦋🐒🌲 Happy International Day of #BiologicalDiversity! 💭Today, we reflect on the critical role of the forest sector in achieving the goal set by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) to protect biodiversity by 2030. Forests are an essential #PartOfThePlan as they provide us with a wealth of services essential for our well-being, from clean air and water to flood protection and climate regulation. 🌏Managing forests sustainably is crucial for safeguarding biodiversity and is instrumental to ensuring the continued supply of resources and other benefits for climate and people. ◾ Forests are home to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity [Source: UN FAO]. ◾ An estimated 350 million people worldwide live in forests and 1.6 billion depend on them for their livelihoods [Source: The World Bank] ◾ A 10% loss in forest biodiversity leads to a 3% loss in productivity [Source: Liang et al.] 🤝 FSG members have worked collectively to improve their practices and protect and restore forests. In 2023 FSG members reported their shared nature and biodiversity key performance indicators: ➡ 24% of land set aside primarily for nature conservation or restoration purposes, representing an area of 5 million hectares ➡ 271,000 hectares of land was dedicated to conservation and restoration beyond the boundaries of their own landholdings to promote impact at scale ➡ 50,000 smallholders were reached directly through programs designed to support the adoption of sustainable forestry practices or manufacturing, and/or building capacity to obtain and retain certification 🎯 We count on all companies across all sectors to help implement the GBF's goals. The forest sector has a key role to play in achieving these goals. We need to manage forests sustainably, ensuring the continued provision of vital ecological services while safeguarding the incredible biodiversity they harbor. 🌳 Members of @WBCSD’s Forest Solutions Group are committed to further protecting and enhancing biodiversity and ensuring the continued provision of products used on our daily lives, like timber and paper. ➡ You can learn more about FSG's Key Performance Indicators here: https://lnkd.in/eGj7u2hr. 🔍 This year, we are developing a forest and nature metrics tool that will support the sector in identifying the most relevant and practical metrics to measure and demonstrate the impacts from sustainable forest management. 🔦 Watch this space!
