Battling #Dengue in a Warmer World: Shedding Light on #WorldMosquitoDay: Did you know that each year August 20th marks World Mosquito Day, commemorating the 1897 discovery by a British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross, of the malaria parasite in a dissected Anopheles mosquito? By establishing the link between female anopheline mosquitoes and malaria transmission between humans, this heralded over a century of research and work to understand and mitigate not only malaria infections but a whole raft of mosquito-borne diseases. Unprecedented global phenomena have since exacerbated the mosquito threat to public health, ranging from international movements of people and goods, the great global urban shift and a steadily changing climate. Simultaneously, our understanding and toolbox to tackle mosquito-borne diseases is rapidly expanding and we stand at an exciting inflection point in terms of the global response to this elusive and persistent threat to human health. Whilst substantial progress in this field has been achieved and must be celebrated, World Mosquito Day also provides a stark reminder that an additional 500 million people worldwide could be at risk of disease-carrying mosquitoes by 2050. Ahead of World Mosquito Day 2024, it has been my pleasure to partner with the Asia Venture Philanthropy Network AVPN to unpack some of these issues through the lens of dengue fever, the world's fastest-growing mosquito-borne disease, currently causing a never-seen-before number of infections worldwide and placing over half the world's population at risk. I would also love to read your thoughts and comments on these questions which will undoubtedly affect us all in some way.
