I'm just back from an amazing trip to Erfurt for the UX Festival. A big thanks to the organizers and volunteers for putting together such a fantastic event. 🏁 I attended several insightful sessions, including a workshop by Dr. Andreas Hinderks on UX Management. It’s clear that UX professionals face similar challenges across all levels, from undefined roles and responsibilities to difficult stakeholder management due to a lack of understanding from upper management. To articulate the business value of UX effectively, Robin Goldberg and Kay Spiegel gave us some valuable tips how to speak the language of business through KPIs, metrics, and credible business cases. 💡AI is here to stay, as evidenced by many new applications like chat interview bots that summarize interview transcripts into paraphrases like the one of xelper ✨ by David Ranftler🪁 and Paul Wesendonk. However, as Matthias Selisky put it, UX designers must not miss the moment to shape this evolution. It's crucial that user needs – or better yet, human needs – remain at the forefront when developing such tools, rather than focusing solely on business values. 👏 Accessibility was another key focus. What stood out at this conference was that as UX designers, we can start testing our designs for accessibility very early in the design process, using methods like the "Wizard of Oz" technique presented by Oliver Vaupel, and incorporating accessibility annotations in design systems. 😍 Most of all, I was inspired to meet so many talented UX professionals, both early and late in their careers. #Retrospectives are the cornerstone of #ServiceDesign projects. Innovative projects always encounter hurdles. If *it* were easy, *it* would have been solved already - challenges are part of the job. Retrospectives allow us to identify issues and opportunities early. However, we instinctively focus on where we fall short. I like to focus on what we should do more of. So that we can all play to each other’s strengths. I learnt this retrospective activity from Redgate Software at Agile Cambridge, back in 2018. I have adapted it over the years so it might not be exactly how they shared it. 🎯 Identify the key principles or desired behaviours for the team (e.g., Learn about our users), maybe as part of your kick-off workshop. 🦉 You can even assign a mascot to each principle (e.g., The wise owl learns about our users and their world). 🗓 During the retrospective, each person marks on cards how they feel the team have done over the sprint, e.g., 5 out 10. 🚀 They mark where they want to be in the future, e.g. 7 out of 10. 💡 Then the team can work out what they can do to move the needle, even just one point. I find that focusing on the positive in feedback or retrospectives is energising. Everyone’s comments were really helpful last week on my first #ToolTuesday, I look forward to reading what you think.

A good rule for user-centred design is to make the implicit explicit. Spell out those initialisms and acronyms, even if "everyone knows what they mean". State the obvious, because it probably isn't. Be clear and direct; subtlety and delicacy are rarely as helpful as you might think. Deliver bad news upfront, up top. If somebody needs to do something, give them an instruction. Designing for XXL-sized projects #1: Did you think you knew everything? In my next post about tackling UX design for large, enterprise-level projects, I want to address how to approach this effort and how to set expectations. Where a small to medium-sized project can be comprehensible, you will have to set your expectations that you will learn so much about this product and the reasons why it is being used that it will consume a lot of time and mental capacity. After all, a good UX designer needs to understand why a user wants/needs to use a product and have a good sense of what knowledge they bring along. In an enterprise-level application, you do not only have to learn parts of the core competence of someone with a vastly different career but also how different aspects of their job align with different features that must be designed. The first thing you have to come to terms with is that you will not know or understand all facets of all features in the application right from the start. Even if you have weeks or months to prepare, you will keep learning about the application and all its capabilities while designing for it. You can turn this challenge into a blessing. The more you know that you might not know everything there is to know yet, the more careful you will be by creating your design rules first. I can recommend covering the following steps before starting to design your first feature: 1. Understand that this tool is being used for work. Functionality is paramount here, and identity is playing second fiddle. 2. Design an excellent, simple, and flexible (responsive) layout. 3. Create a color scheme that still has an identity but allows for primary, secondary, and tertiary action call-outs. Don't shy away from a muted color palette. 4. Even if you may not need it to design your first features, devise a plan for handling specific actions, processes, and habits, like notifications, errors, saving or restoring actions, wizards, etc. You will have to design these features based on your intuition. Only be satisfied with your design foundation when you think you can deal with whatever this project will throw at you before designing your first feature.
