As negotiators gather in Bonn at #SB60 to prepare for #COP29, here are some refelctions on how can we ensure that the money mobilized to address the climate crisis is not only sufficient in quantity, but also effective in quality

The annual inter-sessional meetings of the UNFCCC held in Bonn rarely garner the same mainstream media interest as the larger Conference of the Parties (COPs) held later each year. However, these sessions are often as, if not more, valuable for Parties, business and civil society actors driving climate action – including those working to protect and restore #bluecarbon coastal wetland ecosystems. The Pew Charitable Trusts Advancing Coastal Wetlands Conservation Project is now in its fifth year, continuing our support for the landmark 2020/21 NDCs of Belize, Costa Rica and Seychelles, and expanding project partnerships to Panama, Jamaica, Honduras, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique looking toward the 2025 NDC updates. SB60 was a welcome opportunity to further advance these partnerships, and showcase Panama’s leadership in recently submitting their updated NDC ahead of schedule, including strong, specific commitments to protect, restore and manage seagrass, mangrove and peatland ecosystems. The leadership of Panama, Belize, Costa Rica and Seychelles will be significant for these ecosystems in their own right – however, they are also templates for the kind of scaled action called for by the 2023 Global Stocktake. In addition to these country-level partnerships, Pew’s work to support scaled action is expanding, including leading a first-ever Western Indian Ocean wide seagrass mapping initiative, and working with partners at the Global Mangrove Alliance to establish the Mangrove Breakthrough NDC Task Force, which will support a broader network of countries with their 2025 NDC updates. The period between now and COP30 in Brazil will be crucial for climate action - we are fortunate to be working with an amazing network of governments and partners in playing our part for coastal wetlands within that effort.
