Activities and Societies: Member of Lincoln College, founder and first president of the Oxford Swiss Society, associate member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and member of the Swiss Chemical Society.
My research at Oxford was mostly focused on synthetic organic chemistry and its application to enzymology. I worked on natural product biosynthesis in bacteria and drug mechanism of action in humans. I joined Lincoln College with a Lord Florey fellowship from the Berrow Foundation to carry out DPhil studies at the Chemistry department in the research group of Prof. Christopher J. Schofield FRS.

During my Master studies at EPFL, I specialised in Organic and Biological Chemistry, with a focus on how synthetic chemistry can provide tools to study biological systems. I spend 7 months at the University of Oxford to work on the rational design of new classes of PBP inhibitors as potential antibiotics, using in silico modelling and synthetic chemistry.

Hackuarium is an initiative that promotes open and collaborative research and development at the interface of biology, technology and the arts. It is a vibrant community of like-minded and curious people, biologists, engineers, computer scientists, but also artists, designers and other profiles…

The β-lactam antibiotics and related β-lactamase inhibitors are amongst the most important small molecules in clinical use. Most, but not all, β-lactams including penicillins, cephalosporins, and clavulanic acid are produced via fermentation or via modification of fermented intermediates, with important exceptions being the carbapenems and aztreonam. The desire for more efficient routes to existing antibiotics and for access to new and synthetically challenging ones stimulates continued…
The β-lactam antibiotics and related β-lactamase inhibitors are amongst the most important small molecules in clinical use. Most, but not all, β-lactams including penicillins, cephalosporins, and clavulanic acid are produced via fermentation or via modification of fermented intermediates, with important exceptions being the carbapenems and aztreonam. The desire for more efficient routes to existing antibiotics and for access to new and synthetically challenging ones stimulates continued interest in β-lactam biosynthesis. We review knowledge of the pathways leading to β-lactam antibiotics focusing on the mechanisms, structures and biocatalytic applications of the enzymes involved.

Structural and mechanistic studies on γ-butyrobetaine hydroxylase

The final step in carnitine biosynthesis is catalyzed by γ-butyrobetaine (γBB) hydroxylase
(BBOX), an iron/2-oxoglutarate (2OG) dependent oxygenase. BBOX is inhibited by
trimethylhydrazine-propionate (THP), a clinically used compound. We report structural and
mechanistic studies on BBOX and its reaction with THP. Crystallographic and sequence
analyses reveal that BBOX and trimethyllysine hydroxylase form a subfamily of 2OG
