In Armenia, a strong preference for raising boys has led some parents to abort female fetuses, which means many more boys than girls are being born. But new legislation and campaigns promoting the value of having girls are helping counter this illegal practice. This preference for a boy, together with advances in ultrasound technology, has created a high demand for sex-selective abortions, and Armenia now has the third highest rate of female fetus abortions in the world, behind China and Azerbaijan. In recent years, this has translated to far more boys being born than girls.
Each year Armenia is losing around 1400 girls, in the result of prenatal sex selection and sex-selective abortions.
I’ve done qualitative and quantitative research and over 50 interviews with civil society, government officials and international organisations.

We strive to deter discrimination against the LGBTQ in the society by allowing the general public to learn about the real-life facts of the community and encourage discussion.
We want to build a positive image for the LGBTQ community and encourage discussion about LGBTQ in the society by educating the public. We will carry out the following activities/ events:
    ● Exhibition board circulation
    ● Leaflets distribution
    ● Press release
    Logistical Support/ Needs
Since our project aims at promoting anti-discrimination against LGBTQ both inside and beyond campus area, we need further support on venue-booking, distribution of promotion materials, and attraction of corporate members in the business sector and educational professionals in the educational sector to help facilitate the goal of mass promotion in work place and at campus.
    The Team
We are a group of Equal Opportunity Student Ambassadors 2015/16, chosen by the Equal Opportunity Unit, for addressing equal opportunity related issues. We have profound interest in the field of gender and sexuality issues, including LGBTQ , while realizing the general public in Hong Kong are either not aware of the topic, or have very few chances to learn and discuss about it. Therefore, we would like to utilize the amount of fund to eliminate, or at least alleviate, the negative impression or misconceptions among the general public concerning such group of still very much hidden minority within the community.

The HKU Equal Opportunity Unit feels honoured to invite you to speak at the “Success Has No Gender” panel on empowerment of women in Academia, to be held at The University of Hong Kong. We really believe that you would be a beneficial addition to the panel.
Inspired by the UN initiative “HeforShe”, the jointly organized campaign held in HKU in April this year, Equal Opportunity Unit plans to conduct a series of forums to raise public awareness of the gender imbalance in the workplace, with a view to minimizing sex discrimination. We will focus primarily on gender equality in career and research areas. We hope to broaden participants’ understanding of women’s roles in the emerging egalitarian era, and how women can maximize their influence and potential in society.
Below I have outlined a short list of the goals we hope to achieve through this project:
    i. To create awareness about sex discrimination and gender equality in both career and research fields, mainly taking into consideration the equal treatment of female leaders and researchers.
ii. To promote the idea of equal opportunities for women in job hunting, career promotion and research studies.
iii. To showcase the different management styles of male and female leaders, and gain insight on female leaders’ unique influence on society and the workplace.
iv. To help the youth who are about to start their own careers gain more knowledge about women’s roles in managerial/research positions, so as to help them build self-confidence.
Our team is composed of several members of the university’s Equal Opportunity Unit. As such, we are dedicated to empowering marginalised groups and creating an egalitarian, accessible environment for everyone at the university. The “Success Has No Gender” series is a social innovation initiative that we hope will contribute to the equal treatment of women in different fields of work – or at the very least, inspire dialogue on the topic.
