This past year has seen unimaginable suffering in the Middle East. The ongoing violence since 7 October 2023 has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis that reaches far beyond the region. Over 40,000 people have been killed in Israel, #Gaza and #Lebanon, of which well over 90% in Gaza. The UN estimates that almost half of the dead are women and children. The YMCA unequivocally denounces all forms of violence and calls for an immediate end to the loss of life. We urge for a collective commitment to peace through dialogue and negotiation. Despite the challenges, the YMCA remains steadfast in its mission to serve communities affected by the conflict. Through our National Movements in Gaza, East Jerusalem, and Lebanon, we continue to support young people and provide vital humanitarian aid. Additionally, our colleagues in Egypt have opened their doors to those fleeing violence. Since the escalation of hostilities, the YMCA has launched two global appeals: one in October 2023 to support YMCA East Jerusalem and another in October 2024 to assist YMCA Lebanon. We will continue our efforts in partnership with other humanitarian organizations, working to bring relief to those in need. The YMCA firmly rejects the use of religion as a justification for violence by anyone. Every faith emphasizes the importance of love, compassion, and the fair treatment of all people. We stand united in promoting peace and understanding across all communities.

Founded in 1844, the World Alliance of YMCAs is the oldest and largest movement for young people in the world. The World YMCA, based in Geneva, Switzerland, supports approximately 120 national YMCAs and four regional Alliances across the globe. The YMCA empowers young people, aiming to provide them with safe spaces and opportunities to take an active role in transforming their communities. Celebrating the profound impact of Black heritage on our global #YMCA Movement. #BlackHistoryMonth
This year, the theme of Black History Month is #ReclaimingNarratives, as for some, the history of Black communities has been told through lenses that often misrepresent or entirely overlook the rich and diverse cultural heritage and stories of Black people in Britain. During #BHM2024, YMCA want to highlight our global history and recognise the impact of Black heritage and culture across YMCA’s global movement. 🌍🙌 YMCAs across England and Wales are enriched by staff, volunteers, and young people from Africa and the Caribbean, whose cultures have greatly influenced and shaped YMCA’s story. 🌟 ✨ World YMCA ✨ Africa Alliance YMCA #YMCA180✨ #YMCAGlobalMovement

As violence continues to engulf Lebanon, many citizens are suffering. The YMCA of Lebanon is on the frontlines, providing critical support to over 200,000 people – especially women, children, and the elderly – who have fled the south of the country and become internally displaced. Their efforts are focused on emergency relief, including the distribution of medical supplies, food, clean water and hygiene kits, and providing support to displaced individuals and families. YMCA Lebanon has launched an appeal, seeking over USD 900,000 to support these life-saving activities. Learn more and contribute to this crucial work: https://lnkd.in/dsE9b6TR
