🚨 Global water supplies are under increasing stress 🚨 🌾 2023 marked the driest year for rivers in over three decades, with nearly 50% of rivers worldwide experiencing below-normal flow. 🏔️ Glaciers suffered their largest mass loss in 50 years, jeopardizing future water security. 🌊 The hydrological cycle is becoming more and more erratic, making floods more extreme and droughts more intense. Yet, the data we have about our freshwater resources is still insufficient. Better monitoring and data sharing are key to making informed decisions about water management - because we cannot manage what we do not measure. Using #AI drives #earlywarningsforall and #climateaction. Recent devastating extreme weather events like Hurricane Helene in the southeast US, and the Storm Boris floods in central Europe, remind us that artificial intelligence (#AI) technologies must be urgently developed to help make #earlywarningsforall more efficient, accurate, timely, and user-friendly, and help to plug geographical gaps. WMO is already contributing to the MedEWSa project to support the use of #AI in developing early warning systems, and a Nature Comment article this week on ‘AI to the rescue: how to enhance disaster early warnings with tech tools’ co-authored by our Science and Innovation department colleague Jon Cox reinforces our commitment. https://lnkd.in/eA86V-4z

🌍 The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS). This collaboration is set to highlight the harmful effects of #climatechange on winter sports, tourism, and the wider mountain ecosystem. With global temperatures rising, the impacts are undeniable: retreating glaciers, reduced snow cover, and thawing permafrost threaten the future of winter tourism and the livelihoods of mountain communities. Together, WMO and FIS will work towards raising awareness, providing science-based data, and launching initiatives that promote concrete actions to mitigate climate change effects. ❄️🏔️ https://lnkd.in/dGX3hxAr

⚡ Watch the development and movement of thunderstorms over Europe! 🛰️ Earlier this year, EUMETSAT released pre-operational data from Europe’s first satellite-borne lightning imager, and the images are stunning. 📷 The data from the #MTGI1 Lightning Imager provides weather forecasters in Europe, Africa, and beyond with unprecedented insights into storm activity, significantly contributing to more accurate and timely weather forecasts. 🌍 By enhancing storm monitoring, this technology directly supports the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative, helping protect lives and livelihoods through improved severe weather predictions.
