🔔 In response to the rapidly growing complexities of #AI and #digital technologies embedded in everyday products and services, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has issued a declaration aimed at fostering increased global regulatory coherence and facilitating international #trade. This landmark initiative builds upon the related Overarching Common Regulatory Arrangements (CRA), a framework designed to support the development of voluntary regulatory cooperation between governments, while safeguarding global trade and #technological advancements. It provides a unique platform for global #regulatory collaboration, offering a flexible, non-binding methodology that adapts to the maturity levels of participating agencies. The end goal is to ensure that products entered onto the market are safe for consumers and that the AI elements do not negatively impact human autonomy, mental wellbeing or individual freedoms. The key benefits of the declaration include: 🔷 Facilitating international trade: By promoting increased regulatory coherence, the declaration helps to eliminate redundant checks and supports smoother trade across borders. 🔷 Enhancing regulatory coherence: Government agencies adopting the CRA gain greater clarity and predictability, avoiding unnecessary technical barriers while promoting mutual recognition. 🔷 Promoting trustworthiness and resilience: The CRA addresses the societal and technological risks associated with AI, ensuring that embedded AI systems are safe, secure, and resilient to cyber threats. 🔷 Supporting #SustainableDevelopment: The CRA aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging AI implementations that advance environmental, economic, and social objectives. Info
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was set up in 1947 by ECOSOC. It is one of five regional commissions of the United Nations. The others are the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Its major aim is to promote pan-European economic integration. To do so, UNECE brings together 56 countries located in the European Union, non-EU Western and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and North America. All these countries dialogue and cooperate under the aegis of the UNECE on economic and sectoral issues. To this end, it provides analysis, policy advice and assistance to governments, it gives focus to the United Nations global mandates in the economic field, in cooperation with other global players and key stakeholders, notably the business community. The UNECE also sets out norms, standards and conventions to facilitate international cooperation within and outside the region. The area of expertise of the UNECE covers such sectors as: economic cooperation and integration, energy, environment, housing and land management, gender, population, statistics, timber, trade, and transport. UNECE has 56 member States. However, all interested UN member States may participate in its work. Over 70 international professional organizations and other non-governmental organizations take part in UNECE activities.

🌍 Today, on World Cities Day, we’re thrilled to join UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) in celebrating #WorldCitiesDay, a day dedicated to advancing sustainable, resilient urban spaces with young people at the forefront. 📢 2024 Theme: Youth as Catalysts for Climate Action in Cities With 70% of the world’s population projected to live in cities by 2050, urban areas face rising challenges in the fight against climate change. Engaging young people in urban decision-making can bring new ideas and solutions to issues like poverty, inequality, and environmental impact—particularly in rapidly growing cities across the Global South. At UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund, we’re proud to fund the "Reclaiming Streets for Pedestrians and Cyclists" project, implemented by UN-Habitat. This effort helps improve safe mobility in #Mozambique, #Kenya, #Ethiopia, #Rwanda, and #Guinea. This initiative empowers local governments to create policies and concrete actions to design safer streets and more inclusive public spaces. With road fatalities disproportionately impacting pedestrians and cyclists, these efforts are vital for building urban spaces that truly protect all road users. We are also working with UN-Habitat to create a Global Alliance of Cities on Road Safety (ACRoS) in ten countries in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. Launched in #Nairobi in 2023, ACRoS brings together city leaders to mobilize local funding for road safety projects, promoting safer urban environments. Together, let’s make our cities safe, sustainable, and resilient for all—now and for the future. For the first time, over half the world lives in cities - projected to reach two-thirds by 2050. Cities drive 75% of #CO2emissions and face #climate risks like flooding, heat stress, and #pollution. On #WorldCitiesDay, we’re highlighting one powerful tool to help: nature-based solutions (#NbS). Trees in urban spaces combat #climate impacts and build #resilience. That’s why the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe launched the #TreesInCitiesChallenge, inviting #cities worldwide to make a difference by planting #trees for greener, healthier, and more resilient communities. Join the Challenge and let’s create sustainable cities together: https://lnkd.in/grN2twKQ #UrbanForests #UrbanTrees #Nature #SustainableCities #GreenCities
