Today, on World Hepatitis Day, we spotlight the urgent need for increased efforts to combat hepatitis C, a curable disease that continues to affect millions worldwide. This year’s theme, “It’s Time for Action,” aligns with our mission at Unitaid to make treatments accessible and affordable for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. Despite significant progress, only 1 in 5 people with chronic HCV infection have access to effective medicines. Unitaid remains dedicated to closing this treatment gap and ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need. The amazing progress of #HIV #selftesting being described by Karin Hatzold, MD, MPH at #IAC2024 Unitaid Population Services International

The World Health Organization estimates that 58 million people are living with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV disproportionately affects people who inject drugs and people in prison, who are often highly marginalized and vulnerable. Globally, 39% of people who inject drugs and 26% of people in prison have an active HCV infection. #ItsTimeforAction Prevention, testing, and treatment products for HCV are highly effective, but most people in low- and middle-income countries can't access them. With support from Unitaid, and in partnership with Population Services International, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, University of Bristol, The Hepatitis Fund, and Medicines Patent Pool, we're working alongside country stakeholders to address these barriers. Through the HCV Combination Prevention in PWID and Prisoners Project (HEPC3P), we aim to accelerate uptake of HCV prevention and treatment services among these high-risk groups in India, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine, and Vietnam.
