The Digital Economy Report 2024 underscores the urgent need for environmentally sustainable and inclusive digitalization strategies. Digital technology and infrastructure depend heavily on raw materials, and the production and disposal of more and more devices, along with growing water and energy needs are taking an increasing toll on the planet. Developing countries bear the brunt of the environmental costs of digitalization while reaping fewer benefits. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) calls for bold action from policymakers, industry leaders and consumers. It urges a global shift towards a circular digital economy, focusing on circularity by design through durable products, responsible consumption, reuse and recycling, and sustainable business models. Developing countries bear a disproportionate share of digitalization’s ecological costs while reaping fewer benefits. They generate less than 1 kilogram of digitalization-related waste per person compared to 3.25 kilograms for developed countries. For the least developed countries, it’s just 0.21 kilograms. Addressing widening digital ecological inequalities requires concerted international efforts to ensure fairer practices such as promoting sustainable mining approaches, enhancing digital infrastructure, curbing illegal digital waste exports, and support capacity-building in developing countries. Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic is dumped into the world's oceans, rivers, and lakes. How can we reduce our dependence on plastic materials and products? Trade policies targeting non-plastic substitutes have surged recently, focusing on sustainability and health. Many countries are adopting measures for materials like paper, glass, and natural fibers such as bamboo, cotton, jute, and wool, regulating their entire lifecycle and targeting products with high substitution potential. This UN Trade and Development study examines in-depth policies regulating the sustainability aspects of plastic substitutes, considering environmental and health risks. Growing water and energy needs are taking an increasing toll on the planet, including from cryptocurrency technologies. For example, Bitcoin mining's global energy consumption rose 34 times between 2015 and 2023, reaching an estimated 121 TWh. UN Trade and Development calls for all stakeholders in the digital economy, including transport and logistics companies, to power their operations with low-carbon electricity. The United Nations sounded the alarm over the escalating debt burdens to global prosperity. The rapid rise in interest costs is limiting budgets in developing countries. Presently, half of them designate a minimum of 8% of government revenues to debt servicing, a number that has doubled in the last ten years. Moreover, in 2023, a historic 54 developing nations, with almost half in Africa, dedicated a minimum of 10% of government funds to debt interest payments. The UN has a roadmap to address this burden: https://ow.ly/lmS350S9JVF

The global economy may have seen a soft landing, but for too many we're drifting away from the #GlobalGoals, staring at a future of missed opportunities and broken promises. To change course, we must tackle the liquidity, investment, and debt challenges that hinder the possibilities of developing countries to achieve sustainable growth. With Brazil at the helm, the #G20 has a unique chance to make a real difference.

World Tariff Profiles 2024, published by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), World Trade Organization and International Trade Centre, details tariffs and non-tariff measures for over 170 countries and customs territories. It includes summary tables of average "bound" and applied tariffs for agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. Detailed one-page profiles provide tariff data by product groups based on the 2023 Multilateral Trade Negotiations Categories and show tariffs on exports by main trading partners. The report also covers non-tariff measures like anti-dumping, countervailing measures, and safeguards. This edition focuses on tariffs for critical electric vehicle (EV) minerals, including cobalt, graphite, and lithium, essential for EV batteries and renewable energy technologies.
