Tim Benton of Chatham House argues that innovating our food systems, to produce and consume the right foods in the right amount, would make radical improvements to both human health and the health of our planet. 🌍 Crafting shared narratives through #interdisciplinary collaboration is an essential part of the process, which can in turn foster more inclusive and sustainable economic models and policies. At the Villars Institute we celebrate the power of storytelling to capture imaginations, build bridges and drive meaningful change to the planetary crises that we face. By raising awareness and driving transparency and accountability, journalism is an important tool to influence the political will to take action. Rhett Ayers Butler, founder of the conservation and environmental science news platform Mongabay spoke to us about the power of platforming these stories.

We are honored to announce that the Villars Institute has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Gallatin Award by the Embassy of Switzerland in the United States of America. Presented at the #SoiréeSuisse, this Award recognizes Swiss organizations that make exceptional contributions to the selected theme of the year. This year’s theme is “Alpine Wonders – Reimagining the Natural Beauty of Switzerland.” In less than three years since our founding, we are proud to be recognized for our work in accelerating the transition to a net-zero, nature-positive economy and empowering a new generation of #SystemsLeaders to thrive within planetary boundaries. We extend our deepest thanks to our partners, our growing community of young #VillarsFellows, and all our followers for their continued support in advancing our mission. Your engagement makes our impact possible! Named after Albert Gallatin, the "Swiss Founding Father of America," this Award reflects the strong ties between Switzerland and the US, honoring organizations like ours that embody Swiss values of innovation and collaboration. As a platform for advancing systemic change, we remain committed to restoring the health of our planet through #intergenerational, #interdisciplinary and #ecopreneurial collaboration. Our heartfelt thanks to the Embassy of Switzerland in the United States of America for this incredible recognition! #GallatinAward #Sustainability #VillarsInstitute #SwissInnovation

Conversations around climate change can leave people feeling overwhelmed, particularly with so much focus on the negative or too much data. To reduce eco-anxiety and unlock greater eco-ambition, we need to help people understand the challenges and find solutions in their everyday lives. One way to do this is by bringing art and science together to explain what’s happening and help turn fears and emotions into positive action within their communities. A fantastic example of this is ‘Memories of the Melted’, our most recent collaboration with ecological artist Thijs Biersteker who creates art from scientific climate data. 👉 The idea came when Thijs read a report that showed that Swiss glaciers have lost 10% of their volume in just two years. 👉 He used climate data about Switzerland to create a digital map in which temperatures can be added to show projections – good and bad – in the physical form of a glacier. 👉 It uses the reality of our melting glaciers as a cold, sharp shock in a rapidly heating world. 👉 The installation was unveiled at the Montreux Jazz Festival as a launchpad for its world tour. Local data can be inputted in each location to show the local environmental situation. Learn more in our interview with Thijs here: https://ow.ly/SPr650TpxZW Contact us if you’d like to exhibit ‘Memories of the Melted’ in your location. Today, the first Steel Standards Principles Annual Meeting since its launch at COP28 successfully concluded. It was a pleasure to co-host this gathering with the WTO and World Steel Association (worldsteel) in the beautiful setting of Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. Leaders from the endorsing organizations and partners came together to take stock of progress and co-develop pathways on the road to COP29 and beyond. Over the course of two days, we facilitated sessions on decarbonising the steel industry, with a focus on interoperability, data and emissions, and building a shared narrative for the future of green steel. Thomas W. Crowther, Professor of Ecology at ETH, Founder of Restor, and Villars Institute Board Member, also delivered an inspiring talk on his mission to restore planetary health and ecosystem resilience and what it takes to lead systems change. Thank you to all who took part, and we look forward to continuing our work together on this ambitious initiative. #ThinkFeelAct
