🌱 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? 🌸 Recent studies have unveiled an astonishing discovery—certain plants can respond to the sound of their pollinators! 🐝 Imagine this: when a bee buzzes by, the Oenothera drummondii flower can detect the sound and quickly boost the sugar content of its nectar. Sweet, right? 🔍 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬? • Researchers tested how flowers reacted to different sound frequencies, including recordings of their natural pollinators. • The results? Only the specific sounds of pollinators triggered the flowers to produce sweeter nectar. 🌼 🧠 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞? • This fascinating finding highlights the intricate ways nature uses multisensory cues to enhance survival and reproduction. The flower isn’t just reacting to one sense; it’s integrating multiple sensory inputs and outputs —sound and taste—to optimize its chances of success. Isn't that amazing? 🌿 🌍 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫? • This behavior increases the plant's chances of being pollinated and shows how finely tuned nature's mechanisms are, even down to the vibrations of a bee's wings! 🌻 • At The Smell & Taste Lab, we take inspiration from how multisensory cues work in nature. Just as the flower integrates sound and taste to achieve a specific outcome, we combine scent and texture to evoke targeted emotional responses in the beauty and health products we develop. So, what do you think—can plants hear? 🌿 Credits to arnaud lardé for his article on DEFI-Écologique and to Marine Veits and Tel Aviv University’s team for their groundbreaking study that led to these remarkable findings! #SensoryScience #FragranceInnovation #Multisensory #Neuroscience #Scent #Pollination

TSTLab at ISOT 2024: Exploring Anosmia... 👃❌ We were excited to attend #ISOT2024, where anosmie.org, with Jean-Michel Maillard, presented the book "Être Nez Sans Odorat" (available in English too, "Born with NO Sense of Smell"), featuring a preface by Thomas Hummel. 📚 About the Book: • Easy-to-read, with testimonies from those born without a sense of smell. • Anosmia affects approximately 5% of the population. • 1 out of 10 000 people are born with anosmia (congenital). • Typically addressed between ages 7-12. • When asked if they wish to gain the ability to smell, many expressed the desire to smell their loved ones. This book highlights the importance of understanding congenital anosmia and its physiological, emotional and social implications, connecting with ongoing neuroscience research on social communication and bonding. 👨👩👧 💡 Insights into conditions like anosmia enrich our holistic approach to beauty, as we integrate emotions, well-being, and health to ensure a comprehensive understanding of sensory experiences for all. #Anosmia #Olfaction #Neuroscience #SensoryScience

𝐎𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐬. 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬… 👇 Understanding olfaction is key to how we experience flavors. 𝐎𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is perceiving odors through the nose 👃 while 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 occurs through the mouth during eating and drinking. 🍽 Both are crucial for flavor perception and have significant health implications, yet differences remain. Around the globe, research teams from various disciplines are delving deep into this vast subject... 🌍 🔬 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡: A study by Prof. Johannes Frasnelli’s team, featured in the #ISOT2024 symposium, provides new insights into these olfactory processes. • The innovative Yoshino method used in this study allows consistent assessment of both orthonasal and retronasal olfaction. This means that, finally, a method can measure olfactory sensitivity, identification, and discrimination using the same materials, making it easier to compare results. 💡 • The study found that people are more sensitive to smells through the nose (orthonasal) than through the mouth (retronasal). 💡 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬? 👇 • These promising and preliminary results with the Yoshino Method can lead to targeted interventions, like olfactory training, to enhance flavor perception and address other health applications. • For instance, retronasal olfaction contributes most to flavor perception, and yet Parkinson’s patients, whose orthonasal olfaction is more impaired, often have unusual dietary habits. Now, can you imagine the future possibilities as the Yoshino Method could reveal why by comparing both types of olfaction? 👉 At The Smell & Taste Lab, we are thrilled to be part of the global research community on this topic. Our modest yet impactful work will be showcased at #Eurosense2024 in Dublin by Anne Abriat-Hemmendinger! Join us as we continue to explore the fascinating world of olfaction and its applications in health! 👃 #OlfactionResearch #OlfactoryTraining #Olfaction #ScientificInnovation #FlavorPerception
