For governments to meet climate targets and tackle some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges, food systems transformation needs to be an urgent priority. At New York #ClimateWeekNYC, Lars Holmquist, Charles Brand and Gilles Tisserand will be discussing the importance of this with a particular focus on the ‘hidden middle’ – the part of the food value chain that includes all activities between the farm gate and consumer. The hidden middle sits at the core of food systems and has the power to drive transformative change. It’s often overlooked in climate policy debates, but unlocking its potential could help governments achieve climate change adaptation and mitigation, food security and nature loss targets – while reducing inequality and improving livelihoods. Follow along for event updates and find out more about the value of unlocking the hidden middle here: https://lnkd.in/eVdbfKry #ClimateWeekNYC #SustainableGoals #FoodSystemsTransformation

Looking ahead to a paper-based future for food packaging 📄 Now on supermarket shelves in Portugal is an aseptic carton for milk with a world-first paper-based barrier, which replaces the aluminium foil layer. This is a turning point for the industry, but we don’t stay still. We are investing €100 million per year and will continue to do so over the next 5 to 10 years to further strengthen the environmental profile of food cartons, including the development of packages that are made with a simplified material structure and increased renewable content. #ClimateWeekNYC is underway and the need for food systems transformation is evident. This was particularly apparent during the United Nations Global Compact Collective Action on Sustainable Food Systems event. Here, Lars Holmquist, our EVP Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, joined the panel to discuss how we can tackle today’s urgent climate challenges. And one topic stood apart: while the commitment to act is evident, the enabling environment is lacking. We must urgently address the financing gap to achieve agri-food aspirations. Food systems account for 4% of climate finance, whereas the sector accounts for more than 30% of greenhouse gas emissions yearly*. Increased investment and incentives across the value chain – including the “hidden middle” – are necessary to drive solutions which can enhance market access to safe nutrition, reduce food loss and waste, and accelerate decarbonisation of the food ecosystem.
