📣 As part of SAI Platform's 2024 Annual Event in Durban, South Africa, members had the opportunity to join Nestlé for a deep dive into the innovative low carbon dairy research taking place in the Western Cape. 🐮 The engaging field visit kicked off at Outeniqua Research Farm, a 200-hectare research center focusing on sustainable dairy production and methane reduction. SAI Platform members benefitted from the unique opportunity to engage with researchers in an interactive workshop and learn about alternative pasture species and the impact of moringa supplements on methane production. 🌱 Next on the agenda was a visit to Skimmelkrans Dairy, a 550-hectare fully operational low carbon pilot farm owned by the 4th generation Kuyler family where members witnessed firsthand the positive impact that innovative water conservation, feed management and manure processing interventions have had on reducing GHG emissions and improving soil health. 🙏 A big thank you to George Kuyler, Professor Robin Meeske, Hoven Meyer and Nestlé for their support in showcasing the latest research taking place in low carbon and regenerative dairy production! 🌱✨  #SAIPlatform2024 #PeoplePoweredAgriculture

✨ What an inspiring start to the Regen Reflections webinar series! ✨ 💚 The introductory session, in collaboration with Cool Farm Alliance, focused on grounding participants in the deeper meaning and inspiration behind regenerative agriculture, setting a strong foundation for the more technical discussions ahead. 🌍 Participants were invited to take a moment to reflect on the personal experiences that fuel their passion for regenerative agriculture. This led to inspiring discussions which journeyed us from Guatemala to South Africa and reinforced our collective commitment to create solutions that are fit for purpose across all global contexts. 🗣️ Guest speakers: Lucas Urbano of Unilever linked environmental regeneration with prosperity and poverty reduction, emphasising Unilever's role in mobilising partners, capital, and opening supply chains to new opportunities. 📣 In partnership with Yara International, SAI Platform members benefitted from a unique opportunity to visit De Hoek Estate and Boland Landbou as part of our recent Annual Event in South Africa. 🌿 At De Hoek, nestled in the heart of the Western Cape's fruit-growing region and spanning 100 hectares, we witnessed how comprehensive soil assessments guide precise, customised crop nutrition and irrigation programmes, ensuring robust crop health and resilience. 💚 The positive outcomes of the regenerative practices implemented on-farm, including enhanced soil fertility and carbon content, improved nutrient and water use efficiency and higher yield and superior fruit quality, clearly demonstrate that regenerative agriculture can positively impact nature and climate while maintaining high yield, quality, and commercial viability. 🧑🌾 Our visit also included a stop at Boland Landbou, a premier institution for future farmers with an emphasis on regenerative agriculture as a means to adapt to new climatic conditions and build resilient production systems. 🌱 Here, members had the chance to engage with the experts conducting long-term trials to evaluate different fertiliser management strategies and their effects on greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, soil fertility, resource use efficiency, and profitability. 🙌 A big thank you to Barbara Novak, Chrisna Heuer (Opperman), Anke Kwast and Jacques Smith for partnering with us on such an eye opening field visit! #SAIPlatform2024 #PeoplePoweredAgriculture

📣 As part of our 2024 Annual Event in Durban, we had the pleasure of visiting Donovale Farms. Uniquely positioned in a transitional zone between coastal and inland climates in the KwaZulu-Natal region, the farm spans 985 hectares consisting of sugar cane, navel oranges, hass avocados and tea tree.🌿🍊🥑   🙌 Our passionate hosts, brothers Ant Edmonds and Christopher Edmonds provided a comprehensive deep dive into their progressive land management and diversification strategies, that truly set a benchmark in sustainable agriculture.   💚 Having the opportunity to engage with these pioneering farmers and see first-hand the successful implementation of innovative social and environmental practices was truly inspiring! From minimum tillage and drip irrigation to promoting a healthy microbial subsoil environment, Donovale is a best-in-class example of regenerative agriculture.   🌱 Another highlight from the enriching on-farm experience was learning about SUSFARMS, a locally-relevant and globally recognised continuous improvement system that has recently achieved gold level equivalency with SAI Platform's Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA). 🥇🌍   💚 We are so grateful to Ant Edmonds, Christopher Edmonds, Illovo Sugar Africa, Andrew Cochrane and Pat Brenchley for effectively demonstrating how sustainable farming can be productive, equitable and environmentally friendly.  #SAIPlatform2024 #PeoplePoweredAgriculture

📣 SAI Platform and the Cool Farm Alliance are partnering to deliver an exciting new webinar series, which charts key milestones in the 'learning journey' that our communities are embarking on to scale regenerative agriculture. 🌱 The Regen Reflections series builds on SAI Platform’s "Climate Conversations" and the Cool Farm Alliance's "Thought Leadership" webinar series from last year. 📣  As part of our Annual Event in Durban, South Africa, SAI Platform members had the unique opportunity to visit the renowned South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), a cornerstone of innovation and sustainability in the sugarcane industry. 🌱 The visit provided a comprehensive overview of SASRI's cutting-edge research and development efforts, which are pivotal in advancing sustainable agriculture practices. 💡 Key Highlights included an introduction to SASRI’s Plant Breeding Programme, where modern biotechnological approaches are employed to develop new, disease-resistant sugarcane varieties, as well as a presentation of the institute's extensive research on integrated pest and disease management. 🗣️ SASRI's emphasis on transferring agricultural knowledge to the industry was evident throughout the visit.
