Can #solar water kiosks generate sustainable revenue streams for #ruralwater services? The new research paper by Johannes Wagner, Sara Merner, Stefania Innocenti, Alinta Geling, and Rob Hope, explores how upgrading water supply infrastructure influences user behaviour in rural #Mali. Authors model changes in revenue and volumetric water use when handpumps are upgraded to solar kiosks. Below you can see the map presenting the 15 sites where #solarkiosks were installed across two separate cohorts of waterpoints in the Region of Sikasso, Mali. UDUMA, a professional service delivery company, selected the sites, reflecting the diverse geographical, socio-economic, and environmental conditions of its service area, to trial the solar kiosks. ➡️ Read about the research findings in the open-access paper here: https://lnkd.in/dVNqmrcH REACH | Water Security | Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford | School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford | University of Oxford | #watersupply | #ruralMali | #ruralwater

🌏 Launch of #REALwater research in Indonesia! 🌏 Last April, the USAID-funded REAL-Water program launched new research activities in Indonesia aimed at improving rural water services. This research will support PAMSSANIMAS, Indonesia's flagship rural water program, by addressing key issues identified during consultations with national ministries. The focus will be on improving financial and operational management of water service providers, enhancing water safety through comprehensive risk assessments, strengthening water quality monitoring, and advancing planning for water resource management. Skat Foundation

𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐇 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐥’𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 How did the SIRWASH program play a crucial role in reinforcing Brazil's National Rural Sanitation Program (#PNSR)? This insight is based on the presentation by Alexandre Ribeiro Motta, President of the National Health Foundation (FUNASA - Fundação Nacional de Saúde), during the SIRWASH dialogue. To learn more, download the complete presentation (in Portuguese): https://lnkd.in/d9XiQi_u 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐀𝐒𝐀) 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐇 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 The SIRWASH program, in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (#COSUDE) and the Inter-American Development Bank, has enabled FUNASA to strengthen the implementation of the PNSR. The primary goal is to provide essential water and sanitation services in rural areas while ensuring the sustainability of investments. Three pilot projects have been launched in Amazonas, Bahia, and Piauí, using an integrated approach that combines sanitation, agriculture, and production. This model has improved access to clean water and bolstered family farming and the local economy. Coordination between federal, state, and municipal levels has been key to the project’s success. In the long term, these pilots will serve as models for a national rollout of the PNSR, ensuring the sustainability of sanitation systems across the country. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 During the SIRWASH breakfast meeting at World Water Week, we had the opportunity to host Jose Antonio Ribeiro, who highlighted the challenges of ensuring sustainable rural sanitation systems in Brazil. The key issue identified was the lack of sustainability due to insufficient training and maintenance mechanisms. The ongoing pilot projects under SIRWASH aim to address this by testing governance models and integrating structural actions. The success of these projects will pave the way for large-scale PNSR implementation, with improved governance and active local community participation, ensuring long-term impacts for rural sanitation infrastructure. 💡 To learn more about the SIRWASH program and its impact on rural sanitation in Brazil, stay tuned for upcoming updates! The REAL-Water team interviews Eng. Onesmo Mwakasege, the District Manager at the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA ) in Mbulu District, Tanzania. REAL-Water asks him questions about water quality, projects, budgets, and priorities in Mbulu. #RUWASA is mandated to ensure rural communities in Tanzania's mainland access clean and safe water supply services. Water services in rural areas are managed and operated by Community-Based Water Service Organizations (CBWSOs) under the supervision of RUWASA at the district level. USAID #REALWater is evaluating the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the Water Quality #AssuranceFund through collaborations with RUWASA and communities in the Mbulu and Hanang districts of the Manyara region.
