#alimentation #sport #plantbased #JO2024 #vegan https://lnkd.in/ddqHWBvw

We are honored to be featured in the prestigious Material Innovation Initiative's latest report, 'White Space #1: Sub-Categories with Limited Innovation 2024.' This recognition underscores the relevance of our work in the next-generation materials industry. This comprehensive analysis spotlights the significant untapped potential within the next-generation materials industry, mainly focusing on silk, wool, down, and fur alternatives. To start, the MII tackles the total addressable market (TAM) size of these. For next-gen silk, the TAM is "significant," the MII said, with the global silk market being valued at around $20 billion, projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4 percent, reaching $44.6 billion by 2034. Silk, while high-performing and versatile, has drawbacks. Although limited impact assessments exist, the MII said, silk is considered one of the most environmentally damaging fibers. A life cycle assessment by textile researcher Subramanian Senthilkannan Muthu found that raw silk produced in India has the highest environmental footprint across nearly all reported categories compared to cotton, nylon, or wool. However, with advancements in material and fiber sciences, innovators can create alternative fibers that mimic the favorable properties of silk while decreasing the negative ones. The report highlighted 14 companies at various stages of research and development (R&D) and those already commercially available. And ettitude is one of the innovators that can provide next-gen silk commercially. The global wool market is expected to grow from $39 billion in 2024 to $49 billion by 2028. Wool is a versatile fiber. It can be luxurious (cashmere) and utilitarian (outdoor apparel), as well as insulating and moisture-wicking. But wool is also scratchy and pills easily, demanding high maintenance, not to mention environmental and animal welfare concerns. To be successful, next-gen wool should, the report said, have a lower environmental impact and no animal cruelty while meeting—or exceeding—the performance attributes of the incumbent. The report identified 14 innovators working on next-gen wool materials. And again, ettitude is one of the companies that can provide next-gen wool and cashmere commercially. Some farmers in Switzerland have already realised that one cannot go on with ‘business as usual’. Rising temperatures due to climate change make it more difficult to grow potatoes, beets or maize, the large water-intensive monocultures on which Swiss agriculture has relied for years. Harvests are poorer due to drought and unstable weather. Legumes, on the other hand, are drought-resistant, need little water and nourish the soil naturally. This is why lentils, chickpeas and lupins have long been cultivated in the Mediterranean region and warm countries. Now a group of Swiss farmers and scientists see an opportunity to cultivate these plants in Switzerland as well in order to resist climate change and reduce dependence on increasingly unsustainable proteins such as those derived from meat and cheese. Introducing relatively new crops into a new environment (certain types of lentils were already grown in Switzerland in the past) is not easy. It requires a lot of patience, several trials and the painstaking search for the best varieties for the Swiss soil and climate and the most efficient cultivation, harvesting and processing techniques. Although the road is still uphill, these farmers, scientists and plant breeders believe they will make it. "We are close," one of them told us. I wish them good luck and hope that their efforts will take them far! I thank Stephan Gysi, Sebastian Kussmann, Christine Arncken, Melanie Rediger, Filippo Carmenati, Christine Scheiner, Yannik Schlup, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, gzpk Getreidezüchtung Peter Kunz for their valuable contributions to this article and video!
