Pharmaceuticals are employed globally for the treatment of human and animal disorders, as well as for the promotion of livestock growth. Research from the NBFC - National Biodiversity Future Center provides an overview of the sources and occurrence of pharmaceuticals contributing to the contamination of marine environments and subsequent adverse effects. These emerging contaminants interact with specific biochemical and physiological pathways in target organisms, causing alterations in marine species throughout their entire life cycle. Marine fish serve as bioindicators of pharmaceutical contamination in seawater, exhibiting the capacity to bioaccumulate these compounds and manifest their effects. SARs-CoV-2 has been associated with many negative health effects, including its effect on the human gut microbiome. Research published in the Open Access journal Microorganisms MDPI and cited in TIME explores the most recent studies demonstrating how the virus impacts the microbiome composition. The authors discuss how beneficial microbes in the gut decrease and populations of opportunistic pathogens (pathogens that are more likely to cause disease) increase upon initial infection. Combined, this promotes a decrease in gut microbiota diversity. However, more studies are required to demonstrate the long-term composition of the gut microbiome following infection. Analyzing the gut microbiome in disease states, specifically upon infection, could be a potential method of predicting disease severity and hence, more efficient treatment programs. Researchers from Japan investigated how the dopamine agonist, Pramipexole (PPX), commonly used to treat Parkinson’s disease symptoms, affects decision-making. In the study published by Open Access journal International Journal of Molecular Sciences MDPI Sciences (IJMS) the researchers use mice to further the understanding of this unexplained side effect. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects movement and balance. It’s caused by a loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain region associated with dopamine production. The researchers mimicked the damage caused by PD in mice and treated them using PPX. Then they tested their decision-making using a high-risk/high-reward activity. The researchers identified that the mice favoured the high-risk/ high-reward option.
