The Kofi Annan Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2007 by former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the late Kofi Annan. Our board is composed of prominent personalities from the public and private sectors around the world. We work to build a fairer and more peaceful world where no one is left behind, democratic principles and the rule of law are upheld, and divides are bridged through dialogue and international cooperation. 🗞️ Tackling violent extremism in East & Central Africa requires innovative, community-based solutions. Our latest article highlights successful strategies from Uganda, Kenya, and DRC. https://bit.ly/3xZJtGB Here are some key takeaways: ▪️ Cross-border Cooperation: Extremist groups like Al-Shabaab and ADF operate across national borders. Collaborative regional responses are crucial. ▪️ Community Resilience: Strengthening community resilience is key. In Uganda, radio programs and online exhibitions of video testimonies are powerful methods to educate the public about the risks of recruitment. ▪️ Support for Victims: In DRC, building commemoration monuments and maintaining a database of victims' needs are key to raise awareness about the danger of violent extremism and to foster healing. ▪️ Engaging Vulnerable Populations: Programs like DDR (disarmament, demobilization, reintegration) help former combatants reintegrate, preventing a relapse into violence. ▪️ Building Trust with Security Agencies: In Kenya, dialogue and training workshops improve trust between communities and security forces. “We have the ability to reshape the global food security system to alleviate hunger, end poverty, and promote sustainable development.” - #KofiAnnan It was an honour and privilege to partner with the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens for the first time on the critical challenge of #foodsecurity. Thank you to everyone who attended and our expert speakers. ⚠ Over 780 million people went hungry in 2022, and the FAO and WFP warn of acute food insecurity in 18 hotspots, which are set to worsen over the next few months. ⚠ Our current global governance architecture is not able to prevent hunger, and so we are left picking up the pieces when crises hit—and that is not enough. We face a big challenge that requires a new system of global governance that is equitable and resilient. We look forward to continuing our work to address this vital issue with the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, and through our projects, including: - The Kofi Annan Award for Innovation in Africa (KAAIA). Our second edition focused on achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) with the aim of identifying and supporting entrepreneurs using digital or technology-powered solutions in African countries. https://lnkd.in/erQzezcG - Through the Kofi Annan Commission on Food Security, in which we call for a shared vision for food security that rests on a solid plan of action for transforming the current system. https://lnkd.in/egkvVhbS Elhadj As Sy, Bundeskanzleramt Österreich, Austrian Cultural Forum New York #SDG2 #KACFS #ZeroHunger #FoodSecurityCommission #HLPF2024
A huge thank you to our speakers H.E. Karoline Edtstadler , Elhadj As Sy, Mohammed Hafiz MUSAH, Channing Arndt, Bernhard Zlanabitnig, Melina Tsiamos, and Monika Froehler for participating in our special event on the margins of the #HLPF2024. We are thrilled to have partnered with the Kofi Annan Foundation for the first time to address the vital issue of #foodsecurity. Both the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens and the Kofi Annan Foundation are deeply committed to tackling this global challenge. The insightful discussion spotlighted existing challenges, concrete actions, and solutions to achieve #SDG2 and resilience against climate impacts. 🌽 Stay tuned for the recording! “Democracies are vulnerable, they need to be nourished and we need to be a part of them. Look at #democracy as a joyful thing. We should be optimistic that we can affect change individually and collectively. Never give up on democracy and never take it for granted.” -Corinne Momal-Vanian We are delighted to have been part of the 2024 #CauxDemocracyForum led by Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation.
If you asked the participants at the #CauxDemocracy Forum about their definition of democracy, the outcome would most probably be as diverse as the participants themselves. Some of the core values that were brought to table in yesterday’s plenary, hosted by Sarah Noble, Head of Global Engagement at Caux Initiatives of Change, were freedom, choice, responsibility, accountability, solidarity, liberty, and respect. Sylvia Valentin, Advocacy Officer at terre des hommes schweiz and a board member for the Coalition for Corporate Responsibility, explained how she started a people’s initiative to oblige Swiss-based companies to comply with international environmental standards and to respect human rights wherever they operate in the world. The initiative was not adopted but Sylvia expressed her respect for the many volunteers of the campaign: “It really felt like a movement, like being part of something big.” Lewis Cardinal from Canada and leader of the Global Indigenous Dialogue, explained how he and his colleagues implemented “talking circles” for indigenous people: “ Sometimes the quietest voice has a part of the puzzle that will solve your problem and we won’t know that if only the loud people get heard”. Todd Howland, Chief of the Development, Economic, and Social Rights Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, reminded us that Human Rights should relate to our societies as a whole, claiming it should start with a social contract and the understanding that others do have rights. He spoke about a lesson learned from the population in Angola: “They taught us that we needed to change the way we were working.” For Corinne Momal-Vanian, Executive Director of the Kofi Annan Foundation, optimism and joy should be essential parts of democracy in order to drive positive change, but she also reminded the audience that, as a consequence, the lack of it can be a huge source of despair. In her eyes, peace and security, economy and development, rule of law and respect of human rights are essential elements of a healthy society and, like Kofi Annan - who believed that positive change is possible - she spoke of her conviction that “optimism leads us to democracy”. She concluded: “Democracies are vulnerable, they need to be nourished and we need to be a part of them. Look at democracy as a joyful thing. We should be optimistic that we can affect change individually and collectively. Never give up on democracy and never take it for granted.” The #CauxDemocracy workstream on people-centred economics was co-organised with United Nations Human Rights. #democracy #humanrights United Nations Human Rights United Nations Office at Geneva Initiatives of Change United Kingdom Jacqueline Coté Christoph Spreng Ines Mokdadi Raymond Loretan DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance Sarah Noble John Bond Kofi Annan Foundation Corinne Momal-Vanian Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA Peter Shambrook Daya Bhagwandas

We are delighted to be part of the 2024 #CauxDemocracy Forum, to champion and revitalise #democracy! Kofi Annan believed that democracy could be transformative - that it was the key to political, social and economic equality, the empowerment of marginalised groups, and the ability of societies to manage conflicts peacefully. When he established the Kofi Annan Foundation, #KofiAnnan ensured that support for electoral integrity and the promotion of democratic values of peace, inclusion, and citizen empowerment were central to our work from the start. Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation
In a landmark year for democracy, the 2024 #CauxDemocracy Forum kicked off with high-level speakers and young grassroot activists from around the globe, bringing their insights, visions and experience to the table. Nada Al-Nashif, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, pointed out that "democracy lives or dies with people's rights to participate in the conduct of public affairs: respect for fundamental freedoms is essential" and she concluded: "Let me say: Multiculturalism is NOT a threat to humanity - it is a source of richness in its very diversity and must be celebrated." In his keynote, Ambassador Andrius Krivas, Chair of the Committee of Ministers’ Deputies and the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Council of Europe, spoke about the efforts of the Council of Europe to strengthen democracy, like the protection of human and social rights, supporting anti-corruption measures and good governance. In a panel discussion with Ignacio Packer, three young leaders brought the voice of youth to the assembly. "Democracy should be a lived experience and not just a concept", explained Maruee Pahuja (India). Sidra Raslan spoke about the feeling that her voice as a young Syrian was not considered when important decisions were taken. Jonas Truneh (UK) explained that democracy should not be static and he concluded: "We need to hold our leaders responsible. Neutrality is not an option. The inner qualities that are needed are a profound commitment to justice." Representing Switzerland, Thomas Guerber, Deputy State Secretary and Head of the UN Division, stated: "No democracy can function if human rights and the rule of law are not respected". Highlighting Swiss efforts to promote democracy, he continued: "Given the high priority we will attach to democracy promotion in the coming years, it is self-evident that our partnership with the Caux Democracy Forum will remain critically important! This Forum offers the space we need to engage in precisely these kind of discussions and exchanges. (...) I have absolutely no doubt that we will all be able to draw inspiration from each other's experiences and perspectives, recognising that our diversity is our greatest strength. May this Forum serve as a powerful catalyst for positive change." "Violence is not a legitimate election strategy." In July, under the auspices of our partner, the National Peace Council Ghana, representatives of political parties signed a code of conduct on vigilantism and election violence. Discover more and download the code of conduct: https://lnkd.in/ezB-scSd 💬 Over the coming months, we will host a series of dialogues with electoral stakeholders, especially party youth groups, in Ghana's six 'geopolitical zones.' ✒ This will lead to the presidential candidates' signatures on a public pledge to eschew hate speech or condone violence, respect the outcome of the elections, or take their grievances to the courts rather than the streets. "At a time when democracy is in retreat, especially in West Africa, it is all the more important that #Ghana remain a beacon of democracy." - Sébastien F.W. Brack. #GhanaElections #DemocracyMatters #electionviolence #codeofconduct --- Main photo: Delali Adogla Bessa / Shutterstock. A ballot box in Ghana’s 2020 election.
