Reminder: #Fraud leaves traces! | Some US voters have gone to the polls convinced that the 2020 election was “stolen” and fraudulent, and some candidates have already tried to cast doubt on the integrity of today’s vote.    Indeed, claims of “stolen” elections or fraudulent results have been a recurring theme in elections around the world, often leading to controversies and legal battles.    But electoral fraud is typically a highly detectable offence. No election is perfect, but basic quality control mechanisms and investigations – which are present in the US – will readily reveal any concerted effort at manipulation.   As the votes are cast and counted, US voters, politicians, candidates and the media must distinguish between genuine instances of fraud and baseless allegations used as political strategies. This piece from our Electoral Integrity Initiative has more on preventing, detecting and correcting genuine fraud: https://lnkd.in/eFqxw45w   #electoralintegrity #electoralfraud #USelections #USelections2024

⚠️ Kofi Annan Foundation warns of high risk of electoral violence in US elections and calls for responsible political leadership. As Americans prepare to head to the polls, a new Electoral Vulnerability Index developed by the Kofi Annan Foundation with UpSight QRA, an independent forecasting company founded by researchers at Uppsala University, shows a high risk of political violence. Key elements factored in the Index comprise high polarization, including of the media, use of hate speech and incendiary language, prolific disinformation and misinformation, armed vigilante groups, and the proliferation of firearms. “At a time when political discourse in the USA has become so polarized and toxic, it is worth paying attention to this neutral and scientific assessment of risk factors,” says Corinne Momal-Vanian, Executive Director of the Kofi Annan Foundation. “We call on political leaders in the country to rise to the occasion: they must stop insulting their adversaries, eschew incendiary language, and call on their supporters to respect the outcome of what is shaping up to be a professional technical process.” According to experts, the elections should go smoothly; the real test of responsible leadership will come afterwards. Most activists on both sides sincerely believe they are defending democracy and a number of fundamental values. Yet, there can be no #democracy without respect for electoral integrity. “There is no reason to believe the elections will not be free and fair, and both sides should accept their results,” stresses Corinne Momal-Vanian. The full results of the Electoral Vulnerability Index, including an explanation of the methodology and data points, are available here: https://lnkd.in/dzCDuHb2 David Randahl | Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University | V-Dem Institute

🌍 New report coming soon! 🌍   In November, we will release a youth-led research report that places young voices at the heart of tackling today’s most pressing global issues.    The findings are a call to action for policymakers, international organizations, and civil society to elevate youth experiences and perspectives in shaping responses to today’s climate and conflict threats. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ectPvZWd Climate change, environmental degradation and conflict are some of the most pressing global challenges, disproportionately affecting young people in vulnerable regions. Yet, youth are often missing from the conversations that shape their futures.  But in six countries: #Somalia, #Uganda, #Pakistan, the #Philippines, #BurkinaFaso, and #Niger, marginalized youth are not only bearing the brunt of these challenges but are also leading change to build resilience and foster peace. Join our mailing list to be notified of the report release and launch event: https://lnkd.in/ecBVURxG   --- The Kofi Annan Foundation is proud to release this research in partnership with the Extremely Together (ET) network KRIS for Peace, SUUDU ANDAL, CERCLE DEV and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), supported by the Global Challenges Foundation.   #Climate #Environment #Peace #YPS #YouthLeadership #ClimateAction #Peacebuilding #KofiAnnanFoundation #ExtremelyTogether #GlobalChallenges #InclusiveGovernance #YouthVoices
