The first global mangrove assessment for IUCN’s Red List of Ecosystems shows over half of the world’s mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse. Mangroves are threatened by deforestation, development, pollution, and dam construction, but the risk to these ecosystems is increasing due to sea-level rise and the increased frequency of severe storms associated with hashtag#climate change. In the absence of hashtag#conservation action, about 7,065 km2 of mangroves will be lost, and some 16% submerged underwater. Restoration, the establishment of coastal protection areas and community engagement are some of the strategies we can use to help protect these environments. Learn more http://buff.ly/3UUY9hx

UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28. IUCN President. Global leader and advocate for climate and nature.
As we commemorate the 42nd International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, it’s a moment to reflect on our shared journey with Indigenous communities towards sustainable climate solutions. Recognized at COP28 UAE for their crucial roles, Indigenous Peoples are at the heart of achieving the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement to maintain global temperatures below 1.5ºC. Yet, our journey together is far from complete. It is essential to bolster support for Indigenous communities by enhancing the effectiveness, fairness, and reach of climate and nature finance. Let us all reaffirm our commitment to empowering Indigenous leaders and ensuring that our collective efforts for environmental stewardship are inclusive and supportive. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ClimateAction #TogetherForChange

"We raise our voices in support of indigenous peoples around the world – their human rights need to be respected and their rights to land and resources need to be recognised. Protecting their rights is not merely a matter of ethical responsibility but a crucial component of global conservation efforts. IUCN has and will continue to actively join forces with Indigenous peoples. We are proud to have Indigenous peoples’ organizations as IUCN Members, they have strengthened our voice as a union with their wisdom."
