The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is the governing body of the sport of chess, and it regulates all international chess competitions. It was founded in 1924 in Paris (France), under the motto “Gens una Sumus” (Latin for “We are one Family”). FIDE is a non-governmental institution, and it was one of the first associations of its kind in the world, alongside the governing bodies of the sports of Football, Cricket, Swimming, and Auto Racing. In 1999, FIDE was recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organisation. Being chess a truly global sport, with dozens of millions of players in all the continents, the International Chess Federation englobes 190 countries as affiliate members, in the form of National Chess Federations. Last October the International Chess Federation renewed its leadership, electing a new President: Arkady Dvorkovich, who was the main organiser of the Football World Cup 2018, and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia between 2012 and 2018. As a part of a profound reform, FIDE has recently moved its headquarters to Lausanne (Switzerland), a city that hosts multiple sports associations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 2024 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships took place from August 2-5 in Astana, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿. Forty elite teams featuring both world champions, both world #1s, and world's top-ranked players competed fiercely. Al-Ain ACMG UAE claimed the rapid crown, while the WR Chess Team triumphed in the blitz. 🏆♟️

New GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Title: Over seven million chess games played in one day! 🏆 🌟 On International Chess Day, July 20, a monumental achievement was realized as we set the new Guinness World Records title for the most chess games played in 24 hours, both online and over the board. #FIDE100 🌟 The goal was to surpass one million games, but an incredible 7,284,970 were played! 🌍 109 chess federations participated, with 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka (9,848 games), 🇮🇳 India (9,397 games), and 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan (8,759 games) leading the way. 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka and 🇮🇳 India hosted the most tournaments (78 each), followed by 🇨🇳 China (45). ♟️ To validate the record, all games had to be played within 24 hours as part of the FIDE 100 Guinness World Records Attempt, with a minimum time control of 3 2. 🌐 Over 75,000 games were over-the-board, while the rest were online across five platforms: Chess.com (including ChessKid), lichess.org, Fide Online Arena, SimpleChess, The Chess Alliance, and Zhisai. That is the official communication we recieved last night from GWS. FIDE coordinated national chess federations, clubs, organizers - as well as online platforms to reach this mind-blowing number. Actually the final figure will be even higher, but we already set the record. Think about it. Chess became huge. Proud to contribute to this breakthrough. Heading to major championships in Singapore and New York, which could further elevate the status of chess. Team up!

100 years ago, 15 delegates met during a chess tournament at Mairie de 9 arrondissement de Paris (City Council) and agreed to establish FIDE! And so, the new association was created and registered under French law. #FIDE100 ♟️ 💯 Precisely 100 years later, we are meeting once again at the same venue to commemorate and reenact this historical event. Today, FIDE invited the 15 founding federations to sign the memorandum, just like a century ago.

During the past 100 years, FIDE has sought to safeguard, develop, and promote chess. From standardizing the game rules and tournament regulations, to introducing the rating system, awarding titles, and organizing new events and competitions, FIDE has always been at the forefront of the chess world. As we look towards the future, we should reflect on the remarkable journey of chess over the past 100 years, celebrated globally this year with the #FIDE100 project. We honour the famous players and coaches and the remarkable individuals who helped build FIDE and unite the chess world. Thanks to their efforts, chess is now played by millions of people worldwide – from enthusiasts to professionals, both online and over the board, all sharing a passion for the game. The achievements of the past century inspire us to aim higher and push harder to ensure that chess continues to thrive for generations to come.
