Info
The International Social Service was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, almost 100 years ago in 1924 by a group of people wanting to find durable solutions for individuals and families migrating to the Americas after World War 1. We are now a network of ISS members present in more than 120 countries with a General Secretariat in Geneva providing coordination, training and capacity building. For the last 97 years, ISS has carried out cross border social casework protecting families and children separated by borders. So what exactly do we do? - We provide socio-legal assistance to families and children separated by borders - We protect children placed in vulnerable situations or deprived of their families often for reasons they cannot grasp (economic, social, child abuse, child trafficking, divorce) - We evaluate national child protection frameworks and advocate for laws that are always in the best interests of the child - We provide tailored technical advice and training of professionals with a special focus on intercountry adoption, alternative care, surrogacy and donor conceived persons - We offer training to all major stakeholders involved in child protection

Marijana Savic, Director ISS Serbia NGO Atina, received this year's 'Trafficking in Persons Hero' award from the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The U.S. Department of State annually awards individuals from around the world in recognition of their overall work in this field. Marijana was honoured for her 21 years of work in #victim #protection and her unique contributions, tireless efforts to achieve #sustainable solutions, and insistence on #victimcentered approaches. Marijana was recognised for prioritizing the #vulnerable, her #innovations in work, and promoting long-term economic #reintegration for victims to prevent re-victimization. “ I am most proud of the unwavering commitment of the organisation “Atina” in #protecting victims of #humantrafficking over the years, as well as the fact that we have managed to maintain our #integrity. We have worked hard - on ourselves, we have changed and learned from #women and #girls who have survived trafficking; the two-decade joint effort of all Atina members is crucial in supporting trafficking victims in Serbia but also in understanding the importance of collective impact and contribution of all of you to this fight. ” said Marijana Savić. Last week, the conference of the Project FAMIMOVE took place in #Brussels bringing together around 120 participants from all over Europe. Giovanna Ricciardi, Rölke Ursula, Viola Rentzsch, Sandrine PEPIT, and Wiem Guedira Droit d'Enfance - Fondation Méquignon also participated in the discussions representing the International Social Service (ISS) and its global network. ISS wants to express its gratitude to Prof. Marta Pertegás Sender and Dr. Mayela Celis, as well as to the FAMIMOVE’s Project Board for involving ISS in the development of such an important international project. Indeed, ISS has actively supported this project and contributed to its successful outcome since its enactment not only with its Secretary General Jean Ayoub joining the FAMIMOVE’s Advisory Board, but also with the many inputs offered during the awareness-raising seminars, transnational roundtables, and lastly in the upcoming FAMIMOVE’s book. The enactment of EU projects like FAMIMOVE must be commended as they serve as a unique forum for raising awareness of the challenges in implementing national and international legal instruments regarding the #protection of #children across borders. Specifically, FAMIMOVE has provided an important contribution to the discussions around the importance of adopting common approaches among professionals across sectors entrusted with dealing with complex #crossborder #family cases for the benefit of the #children involved. #ISS100 #ISSwomenexplorers #ISSpioneeradvocacy #ISSrestoringlinks #ISSCONNECT2024 #childrensrights #childprotection #familyreunification #crossborder #socialworkers #crossborder

We are thrilled to announce that ISS partner in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Shobujer Ovijan Foundation (SOF) has been awarded the prestigious Juliette Gimon Courage Award from the Global Fund for Children. This award recognizes their dedicated efforts and contributions in addressing the critical issues of #migration and #trafficking. SOF is a rights-based feminist organization that supports and empowers #youngwomen #migrating to urban areas in Bangladesh due to lack of employment and livelihood opportunities in their home communities. These women settle in slum areas, where they work in garment factories and as domestic workers. SOF promotes the #rights and #wellbeing of #women working in these industries and of their #children through specialised daycare centres, #healthcare, #livelihood skills training, young women’s #leadership development, and community development services. SOF also works on cross border child protection cases with ISS members. Receiving the award, SOF Executive Director Mahmuda Begum underlines “This recognition by Global Fund for Children fuels our determination to continue advocating for a more #inclusive and #equitable society, where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, can lead a life filled with #courage and #dignity.” Join us to support members such as SOF and protect vulnerable migrants on their migration routes! www.100yearsiss.org #ISS100 #ISSrestoringlinks #ISSwomenexplorers #ISSpioneeradvocacy #ISSCONNECT2024 #childrensrights #childprotection #familyreunification #crossborder #socialworkers
