📊✈️ Global passenger data for May 2024 is now available ❗ As we head into summer, air traffic is on the rise. All regions showed strong growth for international passenger markets 📈. See key data highlights 💡 ☑️ Total demand was up 10.7% year-on-year with Asia Pacific #airlines on top at 27%; ☑️ Total capacity rose 8.5% year-on-year. Capacity increased the most in #ASPAC ( 26%); ☑️ Airlines filled 83.4% of their seats. May load factor was 1.7ppt compared to May 2023; ☑️ Ticket sales showed nearly 6% growth YoY in the early-peak travel season. “Airlines are doing everything they can to ensure smooth journeys for all travelers over the peak northern summer period. But our expectations of air navigation service providers (ANSPs) are already being tested. With 5.2 million minutes of air traffic control delays racked up in Europe even before the peak season begins, it is clear that Europe’s ANSPs have unresolved challenges. And the 32,000 flight delays over the Memorial Day weekend in May show that challenges persist in the US too. Airlines are accountable to their customers; ANSPs must be as well. ANSP performance matters to their airline customers and to millions of travelers. We all need them to do their job efficiently,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. IATA is calling on South Africa 🇿🇦 to mobilize its experience, resources and infrastructure to accelerate the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) production. "More than a strategy in support of aviation’s decarbonization, it is a strategy for economic development and should be a top priority for the new South African government. Across agriculture, energy, and transportation, new jobs and industries are waiting to be created that would not only help fight poverty but also contribute to greater energy independence,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist. Africa’s airlines are expected to earn a collective net profit in 2024 for the second year in a row. That is a welcome and hard-won result reflecting the sector’s resilience in its post-COVID recovery. The expected $100 million profit, however, translates into just 90 cents per passenger—well below the global average of $6.14. “Africa’s airlines are making a collective profit. That is good news. But it is razor-thin and well below the global benchmark. And there are wide variations across the continent where many individual airlines still struggle with losses. The demand to travel is there. To meet it, the African airline sector needs to overcome many challenges, not least of which are infrastructure deficiencies, high costs, onerous taxation, and the failure to broadly implement a continent-wide multilateral traffic rights regime,” said Kamil Al-Awadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East at IATA’s Wings of Change Focus Africa Conference. From now to 2050, an almost 1,000 times increase in the production of #SAF is needed to reach #FlyNetZero. Preeti Jain shares some insights around how to accelerate SAF production, and strengthen the supply chain with more production units across the globe 🌍. Listen to the podcast 🎧👇 https://lnkd.in/dGeTG6jP #aviation #SustainableAviationFuel #IATAAGM
This week, IATA held its AGM in Dubai. So how does the industry body ensure that #aviation can transition to #netzero? By hiring a scientist to lead the transition - I geek out with Preeti Jain on how we can scale up SAF supplies globally. This Sustainability In The Air episode is special - it's the first time I've recorded a #podcast partly in Hindi! Aviation is global. Airlines in India have ordered twice as many airplanes as the rest of the world's airlines combined in the past year. With so much growth coming from the developing world, sustainable aviation solutions need to be applied globally. So why not have a conversation about these topics in the local languages? This is what I proposed to Preeti and she agreed! Thanks for the recommendation to have Preeti on, Marie Owens Thomsen - loved speaking with her. Thanks also to Nicolas Jammes. https://lnkd.in/eXA6-ZBn cc Kim Kian Wee

"Alliances are still relevant for a number of reasons. First, because of network utility. Stitching together the networks of 13 member airlines of oneworld Alliance gives us over 900 global destinations to which we can offer efficient service, effective connectivity, consistent loyalty, lounges, and a great passenger experience. That’s what we strive to deliver," says Nathaniel Pieper, CEO of oneworld Alliance. Read the full interview to find out more about how #airline alliances improve operations and customer experience, and are working together on #FlyNetZero. https://lnkd.in/eRyURPVi

✈️ 🏅 ✈️ The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris are set to deliver a sizeable, but short-lived boost to French international #airtravel. Growth in international air #travel to Paris (see the blue line in the #WeeklyChart below) has lagged that of other major European cities (red line) so far this year. However, air ticket booking information shows that the #Olympics reverse this trend, if only for the last week of July and the first week of August. International air travel to the French capital is clearly impacted by the Olympic Games, with ticket sales running between 10% to 50% above 2023 bookings immediately prior to the opening ceremony and at the start of the athletics program. At the same time, growth in international air travel to other major European cities remains relatively stable. #Paris now outpaces sales to these other European cities by up to 30 percentage points. At the end of the Olympics, international ticket sales to Paris return to around 2023 levels while international bookings to other European cities increase, indicating that some travelers may take the opportunity to continue exploring the continent after leaving Paris.
