Our Italian members from Movimento Diritti Dei Pedoni are doing some amazing work. How do we fight back against motor-normative culture? They have started work via social innovation workshops on deconstructing this extremely imbued part of our mobility cultures. What values come together to create this culture? and how do we use a deeper understanding of them to create new paths for change? As well as defining the concept of Motornormativity they have broken down concepts like machismo, driversplaining, streetwashing, stigma... amongst many others. Victoria’s E-scooter roll-out has been a disaster, for emergency departments and for vulnerable groups in our community who no longer feel safe to walk. We're pleased to say that walking is still a very popular way to get around in Victoria (it now comes second to the car)! This is partly because walking is accessible to most people, regardless of their age, ability and economic status. It is healthy, empowering and very (very) environmentally friendly! New research on 30 Km/h speed limits across 40 European cities, including Brussels, Paris or Zurich shows an astonishing reduction in road crashes, fatalities and injuries. On average, implementation in European cities demonstrated a 23%, 37%, and 38% reduction respectively. The research also highlights huge environmental benefits: 📉 18% cuts in emissions 📉2.5dB fall in noise pollution 📉 7% fall in fuel consumption And the conclusions within set a clear path for policymakers: 📢 To successfully implement 30 km/h limits it is essential to launch public awareness campaigns that emphasize the safety benefits associated with the reduced speed limit and elucidate the rationale behind its implementation, with the overarching goal of gaining public support 🚌 Promoting Public Transport and active mobility options is crucial for reducing reliance on private vehicles. Dodge RAMs are 3 times more likely to kill a pedestrian or a cyclist in a collision than a normal car. As well as the physical danger they represent for pedestrians on our streets, they emit between three and nine times more CO2 than the average newly sold cars. A deadly and polluting machine that should not be allowed on European streets. In reality, and thanks to existing loopholes sales have picked up by 20% across Europe in the past year and over 5,000 Dodge RAMs have been introduced to Europe, with current numbers standing at 20,000 across the EU. This is a huge increase for a vehicle that does not comply with EU safety regulations, on-road tests for air pollution or the EU car and van CO2 standards. To face this threat our Federation has now signed a joint letter with the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation Transport & Environment (T&E), European Cyclists' Federation, Eurocities, POLIS Network and Clean Cities and we are calling on the European Commission to take action now https://lnkd.in/eYg4R_mX #roadsafety #visionzero #airquality #pedestriansafety

New research on walking and health! An in-depth study has just been published by The Lancet, showing that walking more is directly linked to back pain reduction. It shows that walking just over 2 hours a week leads to: 46% Decreased recurrence 28% Reduced activity limitations 43% Lowered care seeking For their research, they used the WalkBack method. A two-armed, randomised controlled trial, which recruited adults (aged 18 years or older) from across Australia who had recently recovered from an episode of non-specific low back pain that was not attributed to a specific diagnosis, and which lasted for at least 24 h Low back pain affects over 600 million people globally - so let's start thinking about people-centred cities, or what's the same - pedestrian-centred cities. Let's help people be more active, enhance public spaces and improve walkability. IFP recently visited Budapest, a lead city in the REALLOCATE project which is developing two very interesting living labs. Perfectly organised by Eurocities, thanks to Justine Gangneux and Kateřina Kührová we were able to combine shared learning and exploring the city to find out more about the work that the City of Budapest is developing. It was great to get a tour of the VIII district with Áron Halász who showed us some of the amazing interventions that have already been developed in the area. It was enlightening to see how this district council has been creating new green and walkable spaces in an area of the city with marginalised communities and low-income owners without forgetting to do as much as possible to avoid gentrification. We also had the chance to meet Luca Veress from Jarokelo.hu. A national organisation that has been doing incredible work on raising awareness in Budapest and cities all around Hungary on persistent issues in public space. They have a website app for reporting street issues that receive over 20.000 notifications a year - they then work with a team of 100 volunteers that pass this on to the relevant public body. Over 50% of the cases are solved each year. Luckily enough, walking advocates are more present than you might think (we are all pedestrians after all) and Virág Kovács, took us for a tour around the city centre where we could discuss some of the solutions that seem to be working, what mistakes are being made and what her hopes are for the future of Budapest. Thanks to her work with Eco-Counter we were also able to see one of their great tools in action, which is currently being used by one of the most important commercial districts in the city. Of course, as in most European cities, it still needs to go a long way to break away from mass car use, but steps are being taken in the right direction thanks to BKK - Budapesti Közlekedési Központ and the work by the city council. Child pedestrian Casualties on England's roads up 16% "A new study in England reveals that nearly 50 child pedestrians are killed or injured on England's roads every day" Despite this cruel reality we still have to deal with difficult political and social opposition when advocating for safe school areas, reducing speed limits and parking space or reducing the use of motorised vehicles in our cities. Let's focus on pedestrian-centric urbanism and advance the concept of road danger reduction by focusing on the source of danger - motorised vehicles. Enforcing 30km/h limits, improving the space dedicated to pedestrians, reducing car lanes and using well-designed traffic calming measures. As part of the REALLOCATE project we are developing a new sidewalk scanner. Our prototype uses LiDAR technology, a laser-based beam that measures distances based on the time it takes to return to the source. This technology can help us provide extremely valuable data and support the creation of reports on the quality and accessibility of sidewalks in cities, allowing local authorities to act quickly and know exactly what needs to be improved. It can also be a great addition to local walk audits, providing extra data that can be combined with pedestrian perceptions, feelings and emotions. Our current model allows a single person to carry the scanner - making it very easy to scan sidewalks in any designated area. This prototype is being tested on 9 European cities but is still a work in progress.
