We're pleased to see the United Nations vote to produce a new study on the impacts of nuclear war - the first in 35 years. The results to come will reaffirm what countless experts have been saying for decades: nuclear war leaves no winners.

The UN General Assembly has just voted by a large majority for a new UN study on the effects a nuclear war would have on the world. The last study was done 35 years ago, so this is sorely needed given how much has changed since 1989. Only 3 countries voted against - guess who? Russia, France and Britain. Shameful. It’s as if they don’t want their citizens, and the rest of the world, to be able to make an informed judgment on whether these are legitimate weapons to possess. I wonder why ….

Incredible news: Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organization, has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize! ICAN congratulates Nihon Hidankyo for this well-deserved and extremely important recognition, which comes at a crucial moment when the threat of use of nuclear weapons is as high as it has ever been.  The hibakusha, the survivors of the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the catastrophic impacts of nuclear weapons and push for their total elimination.
