🌍 Day 3 & 4 of the Green Hydrogen Policy Accelerator Training Course 🚀 Over the last two days, our journey into the world of green hydrogen took us through the crucial aspects of standards, certification, legal frameworks, and real-world applications in the MENA region. Day 3 kicked off with a deep dive into the fundamentals of hydrogen standards and certification, led by Dr. Sam Bartlett, Director for Green Hydrogen Standards at the Green Hydrogen Organisation. The session underscored the critical role that robust standards and certification play in scaling up green hydrogen production, trade, and usage globally. In the afternoon, we turned our focus to the green hydrogen initiatives of Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia. Through detailed case studies and discussions, we explored each country's unique approach to green hydrogen development, from legislative frameworks to infrastructure and market integration. The day concluded with a session on Green Hydrogen Offtake and Legislation, where Lamyaa Gadelhak from Baker McKenzie Cairo, shared her expertise on the legal frameworks and offtake agreements critical to the green hydrogen trade. Lamyaa highlighted the importance of well-structured legal agreements and robust infrastructure to ensure the success of green hydrogen projects in both national and international markets. Day 4 took us out of the classroom and into the field with visits to key sites in Egypt’s rapidly growing green hydrogen sector. Our first stop was the Suez Canal Zone, where Tarek Hashem and Rasha Ashmawy briefed us on the development of the Zone, its progress, and the establishment of the first integrated green hydrogen plant. We then saw firsthand how strategic locations like the Orascom Industrial Park and Sokhna Port are being developed into hubs for green hydrogen production and export. These two days have truly highlighted the importance of a comprehensive and collaborative approach to green hydrogen development. From understanding the criticality of global standards and legal frameworks to witnessing the on-ground developments in Egypt. Stay tuned for more updates as we close out this course with a focus on infrastructural needs, and insights from the Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre with a strategy session for the The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), and key discussions in preparation for COP29. The last couple of days were very well spent at the Green Hydrogen Policy Accelerator Training Course organized by Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2, International Solar Alliance, Nile University, and GHIC at #Cairo, #Egypt. I had written about the event in my previous post as well: https://lnkd.in/d4cMpgAq. The overall experience, depth of interaction, quality of questions, prior understanding level of the participants made it a very enriching experience. I ended up taking two sessions: 1. Technology & Hydrogen Derivatives, 2. India Deep Dive - Policy and Status-quo in Green Hydrogen. Some of the key 🗝️ insights of the two days, Countries such as #Egypt, #Mauritana, #Morocco, & #Namibia are leading the African continent from the perspective of both policies and maturity level of project development and developer interest. It was great to hear the progress made and especially the proactive nature of the multi-level policy of #Egypt Several countries such as #Mauritius, #Djibouti, #Cote D'Ivoire, #Ethiopia, #Tunisia, #Uganda are in their early days of policy framing, and have also not come into significant radar (except Ethiopia) of the developers Some of the Latin American participants such as #Panama, #ElSalvador, #Paraguay were all getting started, and to an extent getting inspired by the massive interest in #Chile in such projects Given all the participants were government officials/representatives, they were very categorical with their questions: how will #greenhydrogen actually benefit the society given most are export projects? Very clear answer here: grid decarbonization should be always prioritized first. Other questions included: cost reduction potential, technology readiness, MSME involvement, transportation challenges, environmental challenges, stress on water & land resources Several are exploring #microgrids, long duration energy storage as a major domestic application, especially where local refineries, fertilizers don't exist. An interesting session from #IFC highlighted the playbook on selection criteria for green hydrogen projects - with bankability, offtake, and technology being the top 3 risks. Most of their projects are just in the feasibility stage, except one which has moved further. Very revealing session on #economics by Maarten van der Vlies of Rebel Group around LCOH and it's sensitivity, and the granularity needed to do a meaningful comparison was pretty insightful Overall excellent moderation by Jonas Moberg and organization by Simran SINHA & team was very well appreciated. A lot of learnings and opportunity to network well with many of the participants. Look forward to supporting both Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2 and the participants in advancing their aspirations towards a bankable, safe, and domestic uplifting #greenhydrogen economy.

🌍Day 2 of the Green Hydrogen Policy Accelerator Training Course🚀 Yesterday marked the second day of our intensive training course in Cairo, where we delved into the strategic, financial, and economic dimensions of green hydrogen development. The day was packed with insights from our financial experts that underscored the importance of global collaboration in driving the green hydrogen agenda forward. Maarten van der Vlies from Rebel and Kelvin Mbugua from InVhestia Africa Limited started off the morning with some insights into Project Economics. They examined the economic viability of green hydrogen projects, focusing on key metrics like the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), Net Present Value (NPV), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The lively discussions emphasized the importance of stable policies, government incentives, and the role of developers in navigating the evolving market landscape. Santosh K Gurunath from Umagine then provided an overview of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, focusing on the ambitious targets set for hydrogen production and the significant investments required. The discussion highlighted the necessity of state-level policies that complement national efforts, along with the challenges and opportunities in integrating SMEs into the hydrogen value chain. The country deep dive session on Djibouti and Cote D'Ivoire kicked off the afternoon session as we heard from the country teams on the state of their green hydrogen strategies and what aspects of the enabling environment require the most attention. In the last session, Marwa Mostafa Khalil from IFC - International Finance Corporation was able to offer comprehensive advice on bankability and project financing. The session covered essential considerations for lenders, including the importance of long-term offtake agreements, electrolyser technology, and the need for robust infrastructure to support these transformative projects. The knowledge shared during these sessions is invaluable as we work together to accelerate the green hydrogen transition globally.
